Earthquakes An earthquake is caused by sudden, violent shifting of massive rocks called plates.

Movement of plates releases stress that accumulates along faults.

A fault is a deep crack that marks the boundary between two of these plates.

Epicenter is the point on the surface where the earthquake is the strongest.

How are earthquakes measured? Richter scale measures how much the ground shakes 60 miles from the epicenter.

Mercalli Scale Mercalli intensity is based upon damage of the resulting earthquake and is not measured using instruments.
