Group lead presentation and discussion MgMT20144 – Assessment Item 2 Group lead presentation and discussion

Essay 30% or 30 marks This is a group assignment that involves a 25 minute student-lead presentation, discussion and associated materials. Week 10 Friday (21 Sep 2018) 11:55 pm AEST This assignment aims to develop your knowledge of contextual factors and ability to develop this knowledge in others. The objective is to develop your research, cognitive, creative, communication, professional responsibility and self management skills within the context of a group assignment. It provides you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills as a member of a group. Penalties for late submission are applied according to the policy. This is 5% of the total marks for this assessment item deducted for every day the assignment is late.

Group formation You must be enrolled in a lecture class and a tutorial class by census date, Tuesday 31 July. The unit coordinator will form Assessment Item 2 groups randomly within these larger classes and communicate your group membership via the unit Moodle site; you will not have the opportunity to choose your Assessment Item 2 group yourself. There will be a maximum of 5 group members in each group. There will be no changes to these Assessment Item 2 groups after 31 July so please make sure that you have sorted out which lecture and tutorial class you want to attend by 31 July. Lecture and tutorial classes can only be changed with the permission of the Unit Coordinator after 31 July and no adjustments to presentation and discussion groups will be made after 31 July.

Group assignment focus The group lead presentation and discussion will relate to one of the Topics 6-9: Innovation and entrepreneurship, OR Knowledge management, technology and eCommerce, OR Regionalisation and globalisation, OR Cross cultural issues, diversity and international management. These topics are quite large so you can choose to concentrate on only one part of the topic e.g., only innovation. Your group lead presentation and discussion will take place in either your lecture or tutorial class in week 11 or week 12. However, all materials related to the assignment must be uploaded to Moodle by the Friday of week 10 regardless of which week your group lead presentation and discussion takes place.

Task 1 Conduct a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation in class. Every member of the group must speak during the presentation. The presentation must include information from at least 6-8 academic journal articles. A copy of this PowerPoint presentation should be supplied in your submission uploaded to Moodle.

Task 2 Discuss one current event (something that has occurred within the past year) that you have found in relation to the contextual factor. This discussion should summarise the content of the current event and show the critical link between the external and internal environments of organisations. This current event can take the form of a newspaper or magazine article, a TED talk, a radio or TV interview and so on. A summary of this current event and a link to its source should be supplied in your submission uploaded to Moodle. This discussion should take no more than 5 minutes.

Task 3 Develop two questions: one question in relation to the content of the PowerPoint and one question in relation to the current event. You will be required to lead a discussion of these two questions by posing the question to your audience and responding to their answers. You should provide a copy of the two questions and the expected answers in your submission uploaded to Moodle. This discussion aims to show your critical thinking and understanding of the contextual factor. All group members should take part in this discussion. The discussion should take no more than 10 minutes.

Marking criteria Defining relevant terms, theories and concepts presented in Topics 6-9 (8 marks) Application of current events to demonstrate understanding of the relationship between the external and internal environments of organisations (8 marks) Critical understanding of relevant contextual factor shown throughout the presentation and discussion (8 marks) Demonstrated breadth and quality of research by using a minimum of 6-8 academic sources (2 marks) Developing a concise and structured presentation to the required professional standard (2 marks) Correct use of the APA referencing format in the materials submitted on Moodle (2 marks)

Meaning of words Key terms: words that are being used in this unit such as sole trader, structure, SWOT analysis, benchmarking etc. Concept: this is an abstract idea that someone has named and defined. For example, the concept of employee engagement is defined as the extent to which employees feel passionate about their jobs, are committed to the organisation, and put discretionary effort into their work. It has a cognitive, affective, and behavioural component. Theory: is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something. For example, increasing employee engagement will increase performance, customer satisfaction, profitability and productivity, and reduce employee turnover. Relationship: the way in which two or more things are connected, or the state of being connected. How are the external (e.g., current events) and internal (e.g., decision making) organisational environments connected? Why is this important?

Meaning of words Critical understanding of the contextual factor: provide evidence taken from a wide range of sources which both agree with and contradict your or other’s opinions. Contextual factors: are characteristics of the internal and external environment; such as innovation, knowledge management, regionalisation, globalisation etc. Minimum: if you only use 6-8 references you will receive 1 out of 2 marks. Professional standard of presentation: this is quite a formal style of presentation and is discussed later. APA referencing format: you must only use this referencing system in the body of the PowerPoint, the reference list at the end and in the associated materials. Ensure you familiarise yourself with it!

Professional presentation Every group member must present. Please dress professionally. Show your passion and connect with your audience. Focus on your audience’s needs - what does your audience want from the presentation? Keep it simple: Concentrate on your core message. Smile and make eye contact with your audience. Start strongly, grab the audience’s attention. Use not more than 5 slides. Use not less than size 30 font. For more information go to: http://www.skillsyouneed.com/present/presentation-tips.html

Plagiarism Plagiarism is the intentional use of someone else’s ideas, words or concepts in your assignment without appropriate acknowledgment. It is considered serious misconduct at university and should be avoided at all times. Committing plagiarism can carry very serious penalties for students, including expulsion from the university. Past penalties include zero marks or a reduction of marks for an assignment. This reduction of marks on one assessment item has even lead to failure of the entire unit! TurnItIn is the first place that we look for when assessing plagiarism. This score may increase even after you submit your assignment as more comparisons are made between your work and other students’ work, journal articles or information on the www.

Plagiarism CQUniversity has a policy on plagiarism and you are strongly encouraged to familiarise yourself with it. Not having read the policy is no excuse when you are reported for plagiarism. The following URL will lead you to CQUniversity’s policy repository where you can search for plagiarism procedures and policy. https://www.cqu.edu.au/policy There is also information on the unit Moodle site about plagiarism and academic misconduct. You should read this information and watch the student video.

Uploading your assignment You should upload 2 files: the presentation PowerPoint slides and the associated materials. Please ensure you upload the correct assignment to Moodle. You will not have the opportunity to have your assignment removed and replaced because you: Received a high TurnItIn score or Accidently uploaded an assignment from another unit or student or Submitted the assignment without the reference list or Submitted the wrong copy of your assignment.

Extensions Only the unit coordinator can approve extensions on assignments; but, do not email the unit coordinator directly. All extensions must be applied for via the Assessment Extension Request system on Moodle. Criteria for deciding assessment extension requests incudes: The extension request is in writing and includes sufficient details, such as relevant grounds and supporting documents, to enable an informed decision; When the extension request was received Any other relevant circumstances. The act of applying for an extension is no guarantee that it will be granted. Late penalties apply when an extension is not granted. (5% of the possible marks = 1.5/day)

Feedback The markers will use the ‘Feedback Studio’ in Moodle when marking your assignment. You will need to click on the ‘blue pencil’ to the right of your TurnItIn score to access feedback. You will notice blue ‘callouts’ and short phrases that contain feedback. Click on these to see the feedback that the marker has written. There is also an ability to access the marking rubric here by clicking on the blue symbol made up of eight little squares on the right of the screen.

Questions? If you have any questions about any of the assessment items you are encouraged to ask them on the Q & forum on Moodle. The Q & A forum is on the left side of the MGMT20144 Moodle home page. Do not email the unit coordinator with your questions as your question might be relevant to other students too. By using the Q & A forum every student can see the question and receive the same answer.
