Naming Molecular Compounds Text book p. 152

Naming MOLECULAR Many have common names such as water (H20), ammonia (NH3). The common name doesn’t help us determine what it is made of. ALL molecular compounds, (except those containing Hydrogen), have the same rules.

NAMING RULES… First element – normal name Second element – ends in ide When more than one atom present, a prefix is used which tells us the number of atoms EXCEPTION to rule 3. If the first element only has one atom, the prefix MONO is NOT used.

Prefix + second element (with ide ending) Number of atoms Prefix 1 mono 6 hexa 2 di 7 hepta 3 tri 8 octa 4 tetra 9 nona 5 penta 10 deca Prefix + First element Prefix + second element (with ide ending)

Examples CO2 N2O CCl4 phosphorus pentaflouride dinitrogen trioxide carbon dioxide N2O dinitrogen monoxide CCl4 carbon tetrachloride phosphorus pentaflouride PF5 dinitrogen trioxide N2O3 Dinitrogen monoxide N2O
