Chapter 6 Lesson 2 Soil Pages 264-269
There are many different kinds of soil with their own properties.
One property of soil is color.
Another property is a soil’s texture Another property is a soil’s texture. A soil’s texture refers to the size of the particles of soil.
The spaces between the particles of soil are called pore spaces The spaces between the particles of soil are called pore spaces. They remove substances from water as it passes through. It is a way of “cleaning” the water.
Porous materials have pore spaces in them which hold air and water.
Permeability describes how fast water passes through a porous material Permeability describes how fast water passes through a porous material. The size and number of pore spaces affects a soil’s permeability.
Sandy soil is very porous Sandy soil is very porous. It has high permeability because water passes through it quickly.
Fine soil has low permeability because water soaks in slowly and may stay there for a long time.
Different plants grow in different kinds of soils Different plants grow in different kinds of soils. Soil permeability makes a big difference to what kind of plants can grow in the soil.
