Scientific Question What happens when you try different types of Mentos in Diet Coke?

Background I chose this subject because I’ve seen a lot of videos online of the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment and I wondered what would happen if i tried fruit flavored Mentos or even crushed Mentos? Would it still explode? Would the crushed Mentos make the explosion go even higher? Which Mentos would create the biggest explosion?

Hypothesis My hypothesis is, I think the crushed Mentos will make the biggest explosion since they are all broken up. I think the fruit flavored Mentos will create the smallest explosion.

Variables Independent Variable: The type of mentos Dependent Variable: The amount of coke left after the explosion Constant Variable: The amount of mentos in the coke bottle and the type of soda

Procedure 1: Buy the Mentos and Diet Coke 2: Get a camera to record the experiment 3: Set the Diet Coke and Mentos up outside 4: Put the Mentos in the Diet Coke 5: Record the experiment and write down the results

Conclusion My results of this experiment are that the fruit flavored Mentos create the biggest explosion. It was almost a tie between the mint and fruit flavored Mentos. The crushed Mentos did not create a big explosion at all. According to research, you would need a whole Mento to have a explosion because of the process called nucleation. That is where the carbon dioxide in the soda is drawn to the Mentos because the Mentos have so many tiny nooks and crannies for the carbon dioxide to grab onto. Mentos actually have over 40 microscopic layers of liquid sugar that create lots and lots of nucleation sites.
