Presentation transcript:

Learning bulletin Developer Services Thames Valley What Happened On the 11th of January an operative in Developer Services started his daily routine of transporting metal fittings from the yard to sites where dig teams are present. The fittings have a protective orange net around them which should always be removed before transportation. When the operative attempted to transport the fitting, the protective net slipped and the fitting dropped to the ground . This resulted the operative getting hit by the fitting and injuring his ankle. Why did it really happen? The walkway was not at a sufficient width to allow safe access and egress to collect the fitting comfortably. The operative did not follow procedure by removing the safety net from the fitting before transporting it to his van. The operative did not follow the correct manual handling technique when carrying the fitting. What can I do differently? Do not attempt to lift unless you have to. Always use correct manual handling techniques Assess the weight and check if you need assistance or review the lifting options such as using mechanical aids. The Protective net should always be removed in order to manually transfer the fitting. Ensure there is adequate space for comfortable movement.
