Finding the Balance We need to embrace technology:

Finding the Balance Digital Immigrant? Digital Native? We need to work together to ensure a safe and effective transition into the digital world.

Where are the challenges?

Hold open conversations about your child’s phone usage Password protection for purchases Keep phones downstairs at night and have phone free times Install apps from trusted sources and use anti-virus software Be mindful of your modeling Be in the same room as your children for video calls Set limits on texts and data Receive alerts on phone activity Review your child’s contact list Use phone settings to put restrictions in place

Age ratings: Content and Contact: http://www.pegi.info/en/index//

Conversations around the games that your child plays and who they play them with Be in the same room with your child while they are playing or play alongside them Put pay limits in place or use ‘airplane’ mode to ensure non-accidental purchases or playing with strangers Use time controls and time warnings so that they can save their progress e.g. 5 minute timers Read up on the games and advice websites available Come up with rules and a timetable with your children – try your best to keep at it, even when children resist Maintain a healthy balance – What other activities are in place or could be introduced? Check PEGI ratings and discuss why these ages have been awarded – Would you do these things in the ‘real world’? What would the consequence of this action be in ‘real life’? Block or mute other players or elements of the game

Self-image Perception Peer pressure Pranking FOMO Filters

Communication – Does it seem real? Who needs to know? Do you feel safe? Establish usage guidelines with your child Have trustworthy parental controls in place Block apps in the evening or pause internet access Maintain a healthy balance – What other activities are in place or could be introduced? Keep note of the changes in your child’s mood Check age restrictions and view Parent Zone (specialises in digital parenting) YouTube - Turn off auto-play recommendations using settings - Try YouTube Kids (content more appropriate for children) or Quietube (comments and ads are disabled) Watch videos that inspire creativity e.g. baking something inspired by a cooking video or learning to play the piano
