What was the dissolution of the monasteries? Good learning: Understand the role of the monasteries Great learning: Explain how the monasteries went in to decline and what happened during the dissolution of the monasteries Even better: Evaluate the effects of the dissolution of the monasteries Key Words: Monasticism How far did intellectual and religious ideas change and develop and with what effects?

What was the role of Monastery? In the early Sixteenth Century there were at least 825 religious houses in England and Wales. Over 500 of these were monasteries, the others being nunneries and friaries. However, by 1540 they were all closed, which had huge implications for society and the economy as a whole, as well as the implications for religious practices. It clearly demonstrated just how much power both King and Parliament had and were prepared to use in the 1530s. So why were monasteries so important? Task: Read the first 2 paragraphs of information on page 79 and create a picture diagram (you are not allowed to use anymore that 5 words in total) to show the role of the monastery. You need to think about what happened there, what it provided for the community and the reputation it had. UNDERSTAND the role of the monasteries EXPLAIN how the monasteries declined and how they were dissolved EVALUATE the effects of the dissolution of the monasteries

Why did Monasteries start to go in to decline? The precedent for dissolving monasteries had already existed by the 1530s. Wolsey had secured the dissolution of around 20 houses in the 1520s to fund the establishment of Cardinal College. Some people have argued that their decline was a result of the fact they had lost their sense of direction and their past image is what was keeping them alive. That in fact many of the larger monasteries had now become more like businesses with huge resources in both land and buildings. The ease and speed they were able to be dissolved also supports this argument. However, there were some who were still flourishing right up to the final days. Task: Read the last 3 paragraphs on page 79 and the information on page 80: 1. What evidence is there to suggest that monasteries declined in the 16th Century? 2. What was the main reason given for closing the monasteries based on the survey by Cromwell in 1535? 3.Also including your answer to question 2 and use the bullet points on page 80, list in order of importance (from the most important to least important) the reasons why the monasteries were dissolved. You should explain your positioning. Henry VIII textbook UNDERSTAND the role of the monasteries EXPLAIN how the monasteries declined and how they were dissolved EVALUATE the effects of the dissolution of the monasteries

The dissolution of the monasteries Cromwell adopted a three part approach to ridding the country of its monasteries. First, he gathered evidence to show that religious houses were unfit to continue. Second, he began to dissolve smaller monasteries. Finally, he oved to abolish the rest. Key Chronology: 1535 – Compilation of the Valor Ecclesiasticus (a survey to discover exactly how wealthy the Church was) Also the start of the visitations to the monasteries. 1536 – Act to dissolve the smaller monasteries 1539 – Act to dissolve the remaining monasteries 1540 – all religious houses dissolved TASK: Using the information you have been given on the slide 6, I would like you to: Plot each box in chorological order along based on the timeline at the bottom. Decide how much power the monasteries have at each stage and place it accordingly (this first one has been done for you). Explain your positioning of each one UNDERSTAND the role of the monasteries EXPLAIN how the monasteries declined and how they were dissolved EVALUATE the effects of the dissolution of the monasteries
