Procedure and Safety LABEL DISHES – A or B with lab table and pd. Be sure to measure and record initial length of the planaria in data table. Handle scalpels or razor blades carefully using the procedure demonstrated by your teacher. Try your best to “center” your planaria so it is in a good position to cut. Line up the razor blade and cut STRAIGHT DOWN through the planaria. Return the razor blade to your teacher. Measure and record planaria lengths in data table. Clean up – put planaria in period file cabinet.

Care and Feeding of Planaria The water is very important! Fresh water from a pond, stream or lake is best; spring water is adequate Keep cultures in a cool, dark place Feed planaria at least once a week Change the water twice a week, especially after feeding After cutting them, the cultures should not be fed

Check Planaria (10 minutes) Carefully collect planaria from your class period’s file cabinet drawer. Use tools at your table (ruler and jeweler’s loupes) to measure the length of each planaria segment. Record measurements, sketch a picture and any observations you notice. Change the spring water. With the pipet at your table, remove a dropperful of water from the planaria petri dish and put in the sink. Get a new dropperful of spring water to add to the planaria petri dish. Put your planaia back in the class period’s file drawer and be sure to close after last one is returned. Clean up - Return all materials back into the white tub.
