Wrapping up HES – TEST TOMORROW Answer initial questions in journal Add/Make changes to your Arctic Ice initial ideas. Two - Plicker Questions, have our ideas changed?

What are Planaria? Freshwater flatworms (phylum: Platyhelminthes) Live in freshwater under leaves and stones Avoid light (“negative phototaxis”) Free living – not parasites Carnivores – eat decaying meat, insects and larvae (egg yolks or liver in the lab) 1-20 mm in size Long lived Use sexual or asexual reproduction

Ethical Treatment of Animals 3 Rs of humane experimental techniques: Replacement: Where possible, substitute non-living materials (i.e. prepared tissue slides) Reduction: Limit the number of animals used, but do not increase the suffering of individual animals Refinement: Minimize the impact of any procedure or condition on the wellbeing of the animal

Lab #12 Plenty of Planaria GOAL 1: Observe the planaria. Write 4-6 observations in your journal. Sketch a picture (HALF PAGE) of the planaria in your journal. LABEL TWO PARTS Initial Ideas and Questions: What questions do you have about planaria in general? Questions about about planaria growth? How do you think planaria growth will occur at various scales?

Overview of Brown Planaria Dugesia tigrina

Planaria are complex organisms with systems and tissues Nervous System Gastrovascular System

Excretory/Osmoregulatory System Reproductive System

Lab #12 Plenty of Planaria GOAL #2: Cutting Planaria Experimental Planaria #A Every team will cut this into half, separating the anterior from the posterior halves. Experimental Planaria #B This will be cut in a manner determined by your team. Control Planaria (for class) This will not be cut. Used with permission from UC Museum of Paleontology

Plenty of Planaria

Procedure and Safety LABEL DISHES – A or B with lab table and pd. Be sure to measure and record initial length of the planaria in data table. Handle scalpels or razor blades carefully using the procedure demonstrated by your teacher. Try your best to “center” your planaria so it is in a good position to cut. Line up the razor blade and cut STRAIGHT DOWN through the planaria. Return the razor blade to your teacher. Measure and record planaria lengths in data table. Clean up – put planaria in period file cabinet.

Care and Feeding of Planaria The water is very important! Fresh water from a pond, stream or lake is best; spring water is adequate Keep cultures in a cool, dark place Feed planaria at least once a week Change the water twice a week, especially after feeding After cutting them, the cultures should not be fed

Opening Activity: Jan. 31, 2019 Get Ready to test - Two Options: Computer- grab a computer and log in. Paper copy, be prepared with pencil and eraser I can… Share what I know about Human Energy Systems Homework: Human Energy Systems Test – 2/1 Project draft due 2/5, Final due Date 2/11

After Testing…. If you had a computer, please log out and return to the right location – do not leave out today! If you had a paper copy, place in period folder at front computer cart. Complete planaria work – measurements and observations to complete our initial data entry. – STAMP!! Get notebook checked – 2 x Fill out class Hamilton Takes Charge info sheet at front computer cart.

Snow and Ice Days! February 4th and 5th

Opening Activity: February 6, 2019 Find you initial ideas about Development – baby growing. Discuss as a table. As a group come up with: One Idea b. One Question What questions do you have about our Hamilton Takes Charge Project? Announcements: TESTs are graded and in gradebook – returned tom. If you haven’t taken the test, 2 options. Thursday 8am or Thursday during class. I can… Observe and make predictions for Planaria Homework: Project draft due 2/8 Argument and Action plans due 2/13

Today’s Goals Planaria Predictions – STAMP (HW if not done in class) Collect your planaria, CAREFULLY bring back to table: Measure your planaria, record data and make observations. Change planaria water – SPRING water only (To change water, use pipet to pipet out water and pour spring water to fill up again.) 3. Work on the following: Did you get a stamp on your initial planaria measurements? Get notebook checked – 2 x Fill out class Hamilton Takes Charge info sheet at front computer cart. Period 4 only

Opening Activity: February 7, 2019 Have your planaria predictions ready for a stamp! If you are taking the test – see Ms. Fox ASAP. Collect your planaria, CAREFULLY bring back to table. Grab a computer for your group today. Log in. I can… Record Planaria Data and Work on Hamilton Takes Charge. Homework: Project draft due 2/8 Final due Date 2/13

Check Planaria (10 minutes) Carefully collect planaria from your class period’s file cabinet drawer. Use tools at your table (ruler and jeweler’s loupes) to measure the length of each planaria segment. Record measurements, sketch a picture and any observations you notice. Change the spring water. With the pipet at your table, remove a dropperful of water from the planaria petri dish and put in the sink. Get a new dropperful of spring water to add to the planaria petri dish. Put your planaia back in the class period’s file drawer and be sure to close after last one is returned. Clean up - Return all materials back into the white tub.

Today’s Goals Other back work – is this completed? Notebook Check Planaria Initial Data Stamp 2. Hamilton Takes Charge Project –Goals for today: a. Finalize your topic for your argument b. Work on your argument: DATA - Research data relevant to your action to combat climate change. SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS – what scientific concepts to you need to connect to in you your argument? Complete the Class Record Sheet if not done already

Opening Activity: February 8, 2019 If you did the paper test last week, turn into basket. I forgot to add a point to your test! Pick up the following items from front table: Task/Direction sheet for tasks due 2/12 Cell Division Photos Cell Division Reading 4. Grab a computer for your research I can… Hamilton Takes Charge – Work Day! Homework: Project draft due 2/8 Cell Division Task – due 2/12 Final due Date 2/13

Homework Due Feb. 12th – Cell division Card Sort & Reading Feb. 13th – Hamilton Takes Charge Argument Feb. 13th – March 13th TAKE ACTION/Post your PSA

Opening Activity: Feb. 14, 2019 Have your cell division work out and ready to stamp. Sit with your “Hamilton Take Charge” group – any last minute connections before due 2/26? Which scientific idea explains the following: The positive trend in the Keeling curve? How energy use leads to CO2 emissions? I can… Explain how scientists study cell division. Homework: Hamilton Take Charge – Due 2/26

Planaria Data Collection Take measurement 3 and observations. Record data and observations in journal. Change Water – Spring Water only! (To change water, use pipet to pipet out water and pour spring water to fill up again.) Return planaria back to your class file cabinet drawer. When you are cleaned up let Ms. Fox know and she will bring you a valentine treat.
