WARM UP (10/31) LIFE, LIBERTY, AND PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. THESE RIGHTS ARE CONSIDERED: TRANSFERABLE LEGISLATED UNALIENABLE INHERITED 2. HOW DID MERCANTILIST POLICIES CREATE TENSION BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE COLONIES? BY INTRODUCING INDENTURED SERVITUDE TO THE MIDDLE COLONIES BY REQUIRING COLONISTS TO ENLIST IN THE MILITARY H. BY LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF FARMLAND EACH COLONIST COULD HAVE J. BY PREVENTING COLONISTS FROM TRADING WITH MOST OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES

BRITISH BATTLE PLAN BEFORE SARATOGA

BRITISH AFTER THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA

NEW PLAN: HEAD SOUTH AND….

Why fight in the south? More Loyalists lived in the Southern Colonies, and the British were hoping they would support and supply the British troops in the area. 01 02 The Southern Colonies were richer in resources and more important for England to keep.

BRITISH DO WELL AT FIRST British take control of: GEORGIA end of 1778 CHARLESTOWN May 1779 …looks like the plan is working!

REASONS WHY PATRIOTS WIN YORKTOWN: BUT THEN…YORKTOWN After losses in 1780 General Cornwallis (British) decides to go to Virginia to get back on track. REASONS WHY PATRIOTS WIN YORKTOWN: 1) French fleet cutoff Cornwallis from getting more troops or making an escape by sea 2) French/American forces surround the land around Yorktown cutting off escape by land

WHY DID YORKTOWN END THE WAR? The British realize the war will be too costly to pursue.

Significant Allies BERNARDO DE GALVEZ Fought British around the Gulf coast and in Florida. Keeping British from focusing all resources in the 13 Colonies. JOHN PAUL JONES “Father of the Navy” Built a Navy with great success even though he didn’t have many resources.

TREATY OF PARIS 1783 WHAT DID IT SAY: Battle of Yorktown 1781 - Final Battle of Revolution Treaty of Paris 1783 - *OFFICIAL END OF THE WAR* Negotiated by BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, JOHN ADAMS, AND JOHN JAY. WHAT DID IT SAY: England recognizes America as an independent nation. America gets all land from Atlantic Ocean to Mississippi River and from Canada to Georgia. Both sides agree to pay the debts owed to one another.
