Psalm 22: Jesus’ Song
The Psalms are about Jesus The king’s throne “will last for ever and ever” [Ps 45:6] “Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles” [Rom 15:9/Ps 18:49] “You are a priest for ever, in the order of Melchizedek” [Heb 5:6/Ps110:4]
Jesus identified with the Psalms “The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet’” [Matt 22:44/Ps 110:1] “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” [John 13:8/ Ps 41:9 “They hated me without reason” [John 15:25/Ps 35:19] “…everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms” [Luke 24:44]
Jesus sung Psalm 22 “About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” [Matt 27:46/Ps 22:1] “When he had received the drink, Jesus said ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit” [John 19:30/Ps 22:31]
The darkest hour “Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying ‘You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God! In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said ‘I am the Son of God.’” [Matt 27:39-43]
The darkest hour “Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water” [John 19:34] “Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips” [John 19:28-29] “When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. ‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’” [John 19:23-24]
The break of dawn God “has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one, he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.” [v24]
Jesus also sings part two “Both the one who makes people holy [Jesus] and those who are made holy [Christians] are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, ‘I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.’” [Heb 2:11-12 / Ps 22:22]
We sing Psalm 23 “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” [Ps 23]
