HTS Workshop: Argumentation Contextualization and Chart Analysis

Contextualization and Chart Analysis (Write this) Like synthesis, this is a very difficult skill to master On the 2015 AP Exam, less than 1 out of 3 test-takers received this point on their DBQ Contextualization calls upon students to connect events or sources to broader regional, national, or global processes (within the time period) You must associate events or sources to what else was happening during the time and that might be, in some way, related to the event(s) being evaluated.

Contextualization and Chart Analysis (Write this) Charts are a great tool to build context! Often included as 1 of the 7 documents on the DBQ Using a chart, you must… A) analyze it systematically B) relate it to the broader phenomena within the time frame The 4 Ts & I T1. Time period being examined T2. Topics presented T3. Trends in the chart T4. Tie trends to causes T5. Implications (of trends)

Practicing the Skill (You do not have to write this) Directions: Look at the chart below about the ratio of slaves to cotton production during the 19th century. Then, follow along as the 4 Ts & I are applied to this chart. Source: Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970 YEAR BALES OF COTTON NUMBER OF SLAVES 1810 178,000 1,103,700 1820 335,000 1,509,904 1830 732,000 1,983,860 1840 1,348,000 2,481,390 1850 2,136,000 3,200,364 1860 3,846,000 3,950,511

Applying the Skill (You do not have to write this) Directions: Examine the chart below, and then compete the 4 Ts & I on your notes. Compare your answers with your classmates or with members of your study group.
