Virginia Geology

Virginia is divided into 5 provinces based on their geologic formations.

Coastal Plain- is the youngest part of VA. sedimentary rocks

FALL LINE: separates the Piedmont (hard rock) and the Coastal Plain (soft rock). Rivers create waterfalls and rapids Great Falls

Piedmont - igneous and metamorphic rocks. The largest province Piedmont - igneous and metamorphic rocks. The largest province. Leesburg

Blue Ridge- Billion year old igneous and metamorphic rocks are the oldest in the state. Mt. Rogers is 5,729 ft.

Valley and Ridge- folded mountains High concentrations of limestone and karst topography (caves).

Appalachian Plateau- coal deposits
