Presentation transcript:

Research with Community Groups, NGOs Dr Matt Bowden Senior Lecturer & Head of Research, College of Arts and Tourism

My Own Experience 24 years experience of ”engaged” research, policy research, evaluation studies 1995 – 2019

What is the Basis of the Relationship? Hired external researcher to write a report? Client - Commissioner Independent researcher to evaluate an aspect of work or policy? A piece of socially engaged research? A hybrid? WHATEVER IT IS ….. Approach with the default position of professional researcher Clarify what the relationships will be Stick to the specification and agreed costs Set up working relationships from the outset Work through an advisory group and / or management group Agree a contract with clear terms Sort out the IP arrangements from the start

Other Key points for clarification The research capability of the organisation? The research literacy of the interview panel – ask in advance The research literacy and capability of the liaison person you will work with to deliver the contract What will the role of various stakeholders be? Put limits on how many drafts you will provide – agree process early Agree on the outputs and your access / use of data for publications Remain motivated that the research is critical for the organisation and for you (do not patronise the client)
