Presentation transcript:

Summer School Parent Meeting High School: Bolsa Grande Date: March 28, 2017

Introductions Principal Assistant Principals Counselors Etc.

High School Credits Needed to graduate and attend college Different from Intermediate School Students do not earn Credits if they fail a class Students often fail because they are late, absent, or not working hard enough Failing classes puts a student at risk for not graduating Students that don’t graduate will have little job prospects in the future

Why does your child need to attend Summer School? Your child must attend because they failed (or are failing) 1 or more classes This is different than Elementary/ Intermediate School Your child must come to Summer School on time everyday!

Ramifications of… Failing Classes Not Attending Summer School Lack of elective space in their schedule Lack of space in Summer School Need to attend Night School or Adult Ed. Non-eligibility for Athletics Not Attending Summer School Not earning credits Not graduating Not meeting A-G requirements IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CHILD NOT FAIL ANY MORE CLASSES THIS SEMESTER!!!

Summer School Specifics Session 1: June 26th – July 14th (no school 7/4) Session 2: July 17th – August 3th Time: 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM (students should arrive at 7:45) Location: Irvine Intermediate School Registration Form Attendance Policy Students will be dropped from Summer School on their 3rd day of absence All absences must be phoned into the office and followed up with a note Transportation (provided for special education students in a Special Day Class)

All parents must fill out the third section of the Registration Document and turn it in before leaving this evening. Please note that your summer school classes have not yet been listed. You will receive your course schedule the last week of school.

Classes: To be Scheduled Example: Student Name Student ID Failed Courses: Available Summer Course In-progress Course: Year, Term, Mark, Course,Title Period, Course 10/11 6 F HM0112 Geometry P HM0112 Geometry P Sem 2 2 HM0112 Geometry P 11/12 3 F HM0211 Algebra 2 P HM0211* Algebra 2P Sem 1 10/11 6 F HE0022 English 1 H HE0012* English 1 P Sem 2 * = Currently scheduled class Students are currently scheduled in summer classes based on current failures that have not been repeated. There is a sequence of priority for credit recovery. For example, classes that build upon prior knowledge need to be repeated first, such as math. Also, to graduate, a student needs 40 credits of English, so it is a priority to make up English credits. Based on this priority sequence, our system tells us which course a student needs to take during summer school. You will see those courses marked with an asterisk. Some students are currently enrolled in a credit recovery class, either during the school day or after school. It becomes very important for students to complete continue with the in-progress courses, because student should complete credit recovery as soon as possible. It is not good practice to wait until summer school, as you never know what might occur in terms of obstacles to graduation – there have been students who rely on summer school, then are unable to pass or complete the course and fall further behind. Students are always enrolled and highly encouraged to complete credit recovery when given the first opportunity. Depending on whether a student fails courses during spring semester, or whether a student passes or fails an in-progress course, the student’s summer school classes may change. This is why the letters you receive state “To be enrolled.” The final classes for first session will be confirmed on your Summer School locator, which students will receive during the last week of school. Second session courses, may or may not be determined until the start of summer school.
