SB1b. Explain how enzymes function as catalysts.
ENZYME FOLDABLE 2 3 1 4
Tab 1: Enzyme, Substrate and Active site Enzyme – protein that catalyzes chemical reactions for organisms. Substrate – reactant in a chemical reaction upon which an enzyme acts. Active site – where the enzyme binds. Catalyze- speed up a reaction
Tab 2 – Induced Fit Induced Fit - An enzyme-substrate complex forms when the enzyme’s active site binds with the substrate like a key fitting a lock. The shape of the enzyme must match the shape of the substrate. Enzymes are therefore very specific; they will only function correctly if the shape of the substrate matches the active site.
Tab 3: Factors that Affect Enzymes Temperature pH Concentration Inhibitors
Tab 4: Examples of biological enzymes Pepsin Lipase Amylase Ligase Helicase Many, many more
Center Fold Enzyme are NOT used up and are reuseable. Enzymes are VERY specific they will ONLY work with the right substrate. Enzyme break chemical bonds. Enzymes lower activation energy- or energy needed to start a reaction.
