Biosynthetic pathway of ubiquinone 8 (UQ8) in E. coli. Biosynthetic pathway of ubiquinone 8 (UQ8) in E. coli. The numbering of the aromatic carbon atoms used throughout this study is shown for the product of the prenylation reaction catalyzed by UbiA. The octaprenyl tail is represented by R on carbon 3 of the different biosynthetic intermediates. Enzymes catalyzing the hydroxylation reactions are shown in red (UbiI, UbiH, and UbiF), and those replacing Ubi proteins in some proteobacteria are in grey (XanB2 and Coq7). DMAPP, dimethylallyl pyrophosphate; IPP, isopentenyl pyrophosphate; 4-HB, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid; DMQ8, C-6-demethoxy-ubiquinone 8; UQ8, ubiquinone 8.
