Theme

{The Me}ssage of a story. What is a Theme? Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral, or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work. In other words… Theme is what the story teaches readers. {The Me}ssage of a story.

Topic vs. Theme A theme is based on a topic: -Compassion -Friendship -Honesty A theme is not a word, it is a sentence. -Be compassionate to other. -Friends are forever. -It is important to be honest.

Identifying Themes Themes are not explicit (clearly stated). Themes are implied. Themes are bigger than the story and based on life lessons.

Examples in Disney movies Toy Story Summary: Andy gets a new toy and the other toys don’t know what to think of him. Eventually, they all become friends. Themes: First impressions are important, but they aren’t everything. Teamwork is important. Be a friend to others.

Examples in Disney movies Lion King Summary: Simba runs away after thinking he killed his father. He meets some new friends then returns home to proclaim his rightful place as king. Themes: You can’t run from who you are. Hakuna Matata- No worries. Don’t dwell on the past.

Examples in Disney movies Finding Nemo Summary: Nemo gets lost from his family and his dad goes on a quest to find him. Through several obstacles, his father does not stop until he finally finds Nemo and is reunited again. Themes: When life get you down, just keep ‘swimming’. Parents will not give up on their children. Friendship is important, especially during hard times.

Examples in Disney movies Pocahontas Summary: Pocahontas meets John and has to help stop their people from fighting. She saves her people from engaging in war by standing up for what she feels is right then falls in love with John Smith learning new things from his world. Themes: You learn something new about someone if you put yourself in their shoes. Stand up for what you believe in. Listen to your heart and follow the beat of your own drum.
