The Norman era

In 1066, william, duke of normandy, fought with the anglo-saxon king harold in the battle of hastings. William killed king Harold and imposed French culture and language

In 1086 king william counted all the pieces of land, all the people and all the animals, to know how much he could collect in taxes. The result was a register, called the Domesday Book(Doomesday was the day of the last judgement)

The Feudal system The Normans introduced the hierarchical feudal system into Britain, which was a pyramidal system and consisted of three estates: The nobility (warriors and merchants) The clergy (who used the Roman law and expanded their lands) The commoners (peasantry) The king distributed territories to his barons and the barons in exchange had to help the king in war.
