Review of Net Fishing Management Simon Pengelly Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority

Objectives The Authority has resolved to review and, if necessary, develop netting regulations to: i. Support the use of estuaries and harbours by bass and other fish populations as nursery and refuge areas; ii. Provide protection to migratory fish species as they transit through our estuaries and harbours; and, within these areas iii. Balance the social and economic benefits and different needs of users in exploiting the fishery.

Grey Mullet Minimum Size Proposed size increase to support sustainability of the fishery Current byelaw minimum size of 30cm1 This size is smaller that the size of sexual maturity for all three grey mullet species Five size increase options ranging from 47cm (L50 thick-lipped grey mullet) to no change 1 http://www.southern-ifca.gov.uk/byelaws#Grey-Mullet-Minimum-Size

Additional Considerations Mandatory marking of fishing gear Use of nets by recreational fishers Definition of activities, e.g. ring netting

Consultation Eight week consultation: 15th October to 7th December 2018 Consultation document available at: www.southern-ifca.gov.uk Responses will be considered by Members and draft measures will be further refined
