Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Marriotts Year 12 IAG Raising Aspirations by creating a Culture of Excellence Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind “Teachers set homework regularly.” Ofsted 2016

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Reach and exceed your potential… ‘It is possible to do badly at school and go on to get a good job, but it is not common.’ The Labour Force Survey shows that in 2012, 85% of people with a degree were in work, 75% of people with an A Level or equivalent were in work, 66% of people with GCSEs were in work, but only 42% of people without qualifications were in work. The reality is that having few qualifications is catastrophic for your life time employment trajectory. The Tail Let’s consider each of these WIGs in turn. We want 100% of our students to achieve their personal best. Statistics tell us that ‘It is possible to do badly at school and go on to get a good job, but it is not common. The Labour Force Survey showed that in 2012 85% of people with a degree were in work, 75% of people with an A Level or equivalent were in work, 66% of people with GCSEs were in work, but only 42% of people without qualifications were in work. The reality is that having few qualifications is catastrophic for your life time employment trajectory. And without work, poverty and dependence on benefits are all but inevitable.’ Academic achievement is now more important than it has ever been. “Whole school priorities for raising standards are implemented quickly and consistently by all departments.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Do the right things well Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind 100% of students achieve their Personal Best Do the right things well and you will succeed. “Pupils outcomes, including their attendance, have improved rapidly and are now high.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Characteristics of successful students Good attendance Homework, Private study Intervention Work ethic Willingness Relationship with staff Confidence and self belief Ambition Attendance under 94% = negative progress in Year 11 “Highly effective leadership has secured rapid improvements in pupils’ progress and attendance.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Purpose of the IAG evening Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Ensure parents know what to expect Teenagers not always the best at communicating with parents! Ensure that we can all work together to maximise chances of success Give you an opportunity to ask questions and encourage you to keep lines of communication open Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind “Teachers use their thorough subject knowledge to plan learning that meets the needs of all groups of pupils.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind “The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Be Kind to Yourself! “The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Welcome to Year 12 Miracles did not happen over the summer! Remember your son/daughter has not turned into an outstanding student in the 6 week holidays, in fact in most cases they have taken a few steps backwards! Your son/daughter is going to find the next two years very rewarding if they put the work in, but will find it stressful and challenging. All the support you successfully gave them in year 11 to achieve their results are still vitally important for the next two years. Students need to be ‘weaned’ off the spoon feeding they had in Year 11 – they cannot just go ‘cold turkey’ and succeed. We need your help to explicitly teach and model organisation, note taking, revision strategies and encourage them to work more independently. “The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind How can we help? Marriotts Year 13 Students Achieve Good Grades! In 2017 50% of all grades at GCE or equivalent were A* or A. 80% of all grades were at A*-C. The average grade students achieved was a B or Distinction. Our vocational subjects have maintained their 100% pass rate with 88% of students gaining a Distinction* or a Distinction grade. Value Added Academic Qualification data is in line with National data with a positive three year trend for A-Level. Vocational Qualification data is excellent and is above National data. Marriotts Students get the future they want! 58% of Leavers moved on to Higher Education at their first choice University. “Teachers use their thorough subject knowledge to plan learning that meets the needs of all groups of pupils.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Culture of Excellence Where are we now? Sixth-form provision is good. Leaders have ensured that students follow appropriate courses that enable them to achieve well. As a result, more students than previously are proceeding to higher education. OFSTED 2016 Where do we want to go next? Why? “The value of tolerance permeates all aspects of school life, creating a harmonious and inclusive community.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind 6th Form Goals Post 16 WIG’s 2018/2019 To ensure 100% of students leave the Sixth Form prepared for a future of their choice. To give students the opportunity to develop as young people and gather multiple life skills. To increase the A level grades achieved at A* - B to at least 40% and 100% A* - E. To maintain the Level 3 BTEC grades achieved at D* - D to at least 85% and 100% A* - E. To ensure every lesson, every day, good or better - This includes learning outside the classroom through private study tasks. “Pupils make informed choices related to options, careers and employment and this leads to good progress in their lessons.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Your Success is Your Business! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Ownership! Your Success is Your Business! “The school makes highly effective use of internal and external resources.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind A-Levels A Level reform was introduced for ALL courses starting September 2017/18. Linear Subjects – 2 year A-Level Final A level grade based on A level units ONLY. The AS qualification does not count towards the A Level grade. AS available in exceptional circumstances if students have to drop after 1 year. “The most able pupils make good progress in lessons towards their aspirational targets.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Level 3 BTEC Nationals NQF BTEC Level 3 National Qualifications 2 year full time courses Extended Certificate which is equivalent to one A-Level External Assessment now included (Exams/Controlled Assessments) Not the easy option Much harder than in previous years due to external assessments. You must pass these or you fail the course! “Teachers use assessment information and examination requirements well to plan learning activities that students enjoy and engage in fully.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Transition from GCSE to A-Level Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind MUCH harder (GCSE B grades often struggle) Higher expectations from staff Greater emphasis on the student Greater independence Stress! Time management is crucial! “The jump is big! I found the jump the biggest in Chemistry. You can try warning them until you're blue in the face. Year Eleven students don't listen to the warnings -they're 16, it's in their nature to ignore it all! If they're anything like my group of friends, we all generally agreed that we were the smartest in the year, and that A-Levels wouldn't be that much of a leap for us. However, it was”. “The behaviour of pupils is good.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Transition from GCSE to A-Level Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind GRADE A* A B C D E U 8/9 7 6 “The behaviour of pupils is good.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Use their Private Study time effectively. Are in school until 5pm working in subject areas. Attend intervention (weekends/school holidays). Work less than 8 hours out of school. Read around the subject and have a keen interest. Are in the Blue/Green ATL Zones. “The behaviour of pupils is good.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Transition from GCSE to A-Level Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind 8/9 7 6 Have poor attendance (below 95%) and are often late. Don’t have files or files are poorly organised. Spend study time watching films or listening to music. Leave school at 3.01pm. Do not attend intervention (weekends/ school holidays) Work evenings and most weekends, often late finishes. Do not have an interest in the subject or enjoy their lessons. Are in the RED/Orange ATL Zones. Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Keys to Success “The school’s innovative use of music of different tempos, combined with the diligence of staff, leads to high levels of punctuality.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Planning your time Work/Life Balance We understand that some of our students will need to have jobs to support themselves financially. Try to keep this to a maximum of 8 hours a week. Make sure your employer is not making you work late nights or all weekend. Ensure that during busy academic Mock/PPE and External exams you reduce your hours allowing you to prepare effectively. Make sure you block in some social to spend with friends, family or a particular hobby. “Pupils’ attainment and progress across eight subjects at key stage 4 are above the national average.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

In Class Contribution Lesson time is the most important time! Every Minute Matters Students should not miss lessons and think emailing your teacher for the work is ok. You have access to outstanding teaching, do not waste it! Students will only get out of a lesson, what they put in. Ensure their ‘Approach to Learning’ is excellent. Engage with the teacher, question them, challenge them for more information. Students must contribute fully in lessons. Sitting quietly is not the best way forward. Developing your discussion, debating and presentation skills will prepare them for university or apprenticeships in the future! “Pupils’ attainment and progress across eight subjects at key stage 4 are above the national average.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Don’t accept “I’ve done all my work”. Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Private Study A Year 12/13 Student will always have work they can be doing! Don’t accept “I’ve done all my work”. Read through your lesson notes. Condense lesson notes into a revision cards/mind maps. Organised your folder and put your lesson notes into the correct section. Have you completed your extended study tasks? Have you done any extra reading around the subjects you are studying? Created a to do list? Have you checked for private study tasks on SMHW? Have you looked at Past Exam Papers for your subjects? Have you spoken to your subject teachers about any gaps in your knowledge to find out what you can do to Close the Gaps? “Pupils’ attainment and progress across eight subjects at key stage 4 are above the national average.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Pastoral Year Leader of Post 16 Mr Illingworth Good evening and again welcome to the Marriotts sixth form IAG open evening. For those of you that do not know me or that have not yet met me, I am Mr Illingworth and I am the pastoral leader of sixth form. We take a holistic approach to the care of your child and through our team we have a member of staff with different focuses and areas of the sixth form. As Mr Winter is the head of Key stage 5 and assistant head teacher, his main responsibility is the overall running of the sixth form and focusing on you data and grades. For myself, I focus more on the pastoral side of things, extra-curricular activities, behaviour and the day to day goings on within the sixth form area. Any parental issues, problems, or concerns, I am the port of call if deemed a higher priority than for your form tutors. Although between us, our roles overlap all of the time, the sixth form students are privileged to have a dedicated member of staff to focus on each area. As mentioned, outside of the classroom, the majority of things organised are through me. This will include life skills, Marriotts Extra, trips, form time activities, guest speakers and talks, behaviour, attendance, university preparation and all other aspects related. “Use of feedback explains to students what their strengths are as well as how to improve their learning.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Student Handbook Every student can get access to the Marriotts student handbook with the most up to date information and guidance for their time in Sixth Form. We have hard copies and this is also available on the Sixth Form area of the website. Students are to treat this book as their “Sixth Form Bible” A lot of tonight's information will be included for students to refer to. This includes information such as: Fire safety information, Sixth Form rules, dress code, contact details and other such information. Students, please share this with your parents! To begin with, all students have access to the sixth form handbook. I put this together to be the Marriotts Sixth form student “bible”. The sixth form handbook gives an out and out guiding for both students and parents on what is expected within the sixth form. A lot of tonight's information will be in there It is available to download/print on the sixth form area of the website It will also contain all of the information and contact details for teachers and form tutors It is there if you are ever unsure about our policies and to help you as a reminder of the day to day running in the sixth form. I wont spend time reading it to you all today, but would strongly advise you all taking time going through this and then if required you can get back to me with any questions or queries. I will now though spend some time looking at some of the key elements within the handbook and on the day to day activities within the sixth form. “Students’ personal development is strong and they are well prepared for the next stage of their education or career.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Pastoral Programme Year Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 12 Current Affairs Discussion/Debate Student Voice based activities, what is in the news and brainteasers British Values, Finance & miscellaneous Assembly Mentor meetings Attendance Tracking and Literature Focus Students have form time daily and an assembly once a week from 8.30- 8.50am. We have a comprehensive pastoral programme designed to support a student’s learning and personal development. Extended advice and guidance including guest speakers, University visits and support, outside mentors and extra curricular programmes such as NCS. Students are also encouraged to take on a school responsibility to build on their skill sets and help build their CV. The pastoral programme is a bespoke programme specifically designed to cater to the needs of the modern sixth former. The form plans include… This is a compulsory part of the school day and often where a lot of key information and notices are given Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind “16 to 19 study programmes are met comprehensively.” Ofsted 2016

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Extra Curricular As part of the Sixth Form there will be several opportunities for extra curricular activities over the year. Current plans include: Annual Winter Wonderland Trip (Consortium) Water Sports Trip The Gambia Experience End of year boat party Ski Trip/Moscow Trip The Skills Show exhibition UK Rock Challenge Multiple School Concerts Post 16 sports teams Theatre Shows Stephen Hawking Society Charitable activities NCS England Football Learn to Live trip (next week Tuesday) As part of the Sixth Form there will be several opportunities for extra curricular activities over the year. We encourage students to get involved in as many of these activities as possible. They are there not only for enjoyment, but to team build, allow sixth form cohesion and help student develop as young adults. We aim to help students develop and grow both inside and outside of the classroom and prepare them for life outside of school. We understand that it a scary prospect leaving sixth form regardless of where you are going but we do all we can to prepare students for that way of life during their time with us. This could be university, an apprenticeship or a work placement. Each student will have their own preference and we will set them up with the appropriate member of staff to work with them to get there. “Different groups of pupils are challenged and make good progress.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Attendance Be here, get there! Attend today, achieve tomorrow! Marriotts Sixth Form expects students attendance to be at 95% as a minimum. We aim to set our students up as much as possible for life after education and teach them the principles of attendance and punctuality. Continued absence could eventually result in a sixth form student losing their place at Marriotts. Research has shown that missing 14 days of school a year will result in drop of one whole grade as a minimum… It all adds up. Our systems: 2 lates in a week will result in “compulsory study”. If absent with no reason, parents receive a text. No response by 9:30am results in a phone call home. Persistent attendance/punctuality issues will get a letter of warning home. Students expected to make time up after school. Parental meetings to follow. Review of place in the Sixth Form We are now fortunate enough to have an attendance office, Mrs Daly, to work with us in the sixth form. Any major issues will result in student/parents having to meet with myself, but on a day to day basis, expect to hear from her. If students are late, they are to sign in with her and work with her on a daily basis to get in on time. This is not for our benefit, but your each individual student… Correlation between attendance and grades. All students are full time although can earn time off through positive grades and work to “study from home”… In these instances, students are to complete paperwork etc. This also goes for drinking and nights out Drivers – car parks (not to be used as an excuse) Interviews, driving lessons and tests outside of school time where possible or inform us Off site only at break and lunch. School does not need to finish at 3:01 and students are welcome to stay in the sixth form to study. Be here, get there! Attend today, achieve tomorrow! “Different groups of pupils are challenged and make good progress.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind

Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Punctuality Attending Sixth Form is not optional. Once you join, you are expected in school from 8:30am until 4pm everyday until your courses are completed. There is a student/parent agreement which you are to sign in acceptance of this. Missing time off school will result in hours of extended study for you to make up. Missing several lessons/days will result in you loosing your place in the Sixth Form. This is also the case with regard to punctuality. Form time is used to help engage and inform you on a daily basis. It is not optional. There is an escalation for lates and missing time at the beginning of the day. If you apply to study here, it means you want to be here. There will be Friday morning check ups with your form tutors to review the week. Attending Sixth Form is not optional. Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Work Experience We recognise the importance of work experience and strongly recommend that all Sixth Form students participate in this. There will be a term in the new year where students can use their study time to participate in work experience. Experience is to be based around future career aspirations and not paid. We will use form time and study sessions to help students apply. Students should begin their search as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Importance of work experience Paid work and amount of hours Sixth form has to be priority Can not have students coming in late because of yesterdays shifts “Different groups of pupils are challenged and make good progress.” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Uniform The regular smart/business dress code for all students can be found in your handbook and on the website. Aim High. Work Hard. Be Kind Points of Contact If you wish to contact school regarding your son/daughter please email the Form Tutor. They will then pass your message on to the relevant team depending on whether it is a Pastoral matter or a Teaching and Learning concern. Form tutor email addresses can be found on the Sixth form website. Follow @MarriottsP16 on twitter for daily updates and information. If the concern is of an urgent nature please contact the school office, rather than using email. They will ensure the correct member of staff is alerted.
