Competition Overview Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ). PhD students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

What?

What? What excites you about your research? What’s the main message? Why should people care about your research? What is a metaphor or analogy that can help your audience get your super important research topic? How does your research aim to solve a problem? What is the significance/impact of your research?

Eligibility Any PhD student who has passed their qualifying exam but who has not graduated yet (they can have defended) Any MD/PhD student who has passed their qualifying exams but who has not started their third year of medical school

Rules A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration). . Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.

Judging Criteria Comprehension & Content Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon? Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes? Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence? Was the thesis topic, research significance, results/impact and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience? Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation - or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

Judging Criteria Engagement & Communication Did the oration make the audience want to know more? Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research? Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research? Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience's attention? Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance? Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation - was it clear, legible, and concise?

Answers to Questions The preliminary round will only be you in M61 with a judging panel You will use the same presentation for the preliminary heat as well as the final heat You’re allowed to incorporate the feedback from the judges Eligible candidates have to have passed their qualifying exam by the 3MT final competition (April 10) There will be a timer and a 10 second warner for the final heat You will not be disqualified from the preliminary heat if you go over 3 minutes but it might reflect in your overall score
