Science Vocabulary 3 week 9

Solids A substance that has a definite shape and a definite volume.

Buoyancy The capacity to float or rise up in a liquid or gas.

Phases A particular point in the time of a cycle; distinct time period in a sequence of events; a stage in a cycle of change.

Gas   One of the three states of matter. This state of matter has no fixed shape and no fixed volume.

Liquid A state of matter that has no fixed shape but that has a definite volume.

Volume The amount of space that an object occupies.

Perpetually In a way that never ends or changes; constantly.

Expand Become larger in size or volume or quantity.

Contract Decrease in size, number, or range.

Physical Properties DO NOT change the structure of the matter when it is observed or described.

Chemical Properties The types of changes the matter can undergo.

Density Is how we measure how much matter is in a given amount of space.  Density = Mass ÷ Volume

Boiling Point The temperature at which a substance turns from a liquid to a gas.

Melting Point The temperature at which a substance turns from a solid into a liquid.

Solution A homogenous combination of two or more substances.

Freezing Point The temperature at which a substance turns from a liquid to a solid.

Condensing Cause a gas or vapor to change into a liquid.

Solvent The part of a solution that does the dissolving.

Solubility Means the amount of a substance that can be dissolved in another substance.

Mixture A heterogeneous combination of two or more substances that keep their properties.

Solute The part of a solution that gets dissolved.
