Microbes- A Microscopic World

Micro-organisms Otherwise known as microbes are so small that a microscope is needed to see them!

Microbes Include Bacteria Viruses Protists

Some Microbes are Helpful Some microbes are producers They are the first link in the food chain for many kinds of living things. Some microbes are decomposers They return nutrients to the environment. Other living things use these nutrients.

What else? Some kinds of bacteria grow on the roots of plants. These plants need nitrogen, and the microbes make it available to them in a form they can use!

Some examples of helpful interactions… Help us digest food and prevent infection Used for food processing, drug and agricultural industry Waste management

Microbes can be Harmful… Some microbes cause illness or even threaten life.

Some example of harmful interactions… Pathogens are microbes that can make us sick Cause food to spoil Cause wood to rot
