How to disagree and do it well The Art of Compromise How to disagree and do it well

What is Compromise? Compromise is when two groups or people have different opinions but meeting in the middle somewhere. They come up with a solution that can attend to the needs of both groups.

What is compromise? What is a time in your life when you had to compromise? i.e.: restaurant, movie, things to do, etc. Have you ever been with someone who will not compromise? Who do you often compromise with? Is compromise important to a relationship? Is compromise important to a marriage?

What are the steps to compromising? Know where you stand Listen well to the other person’s/group’s position Find what is most important to both groups Consider solutions that best meet the needs – not wants – of both groups Rework the solution until everyone is satisfied Try the solution until it works or a new solution is needed (back to step 1)

What happens when no one wants to compromise? “agree to disagree” What happens when there is no compromise? When is it ok to not compromise? Political opinion Religious conviction _____________________________________

Situational Compromises Listen to the different positions and situations of various people. What do you think? How can they compromise? Which concern is of the greatest concern?

Make a Poster about Compromise In your groups, research about how to compromise. Illustrate how to compromise and what the steps are: What are the steps to compromise? Why are they important? Is there a right or wrong way to compromise?
