Genes involved in EPEC pathogenesis. Genes involved in EPEC pathogenesis. Genes involved in the pathogenesis of EPEC-induced diarrhea are presented in schematic fashion. Chromosomal virulence genes are clustered within the LEE, which encodes a type III secretory apparatus as well as intimin and a cluster of secreted effector proteins. The EAF plasmid encodes the BFP as well as a cluster of genes required for normal expression of BFP and intimin. James P. Nataro, and James B. Kaper Clin. Microbiol. Rev. 1998; doi:10.1128/CMR.11.1.142
