ALEXANDER THE GREAT

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

PELOPONNESIAN WAR, 431-404 BCE Tensions rose after the Persian Wars ATHENS VS. SPARTA Plagues and Spartan prowess weakened Athens Plagues and natural disasters weaken the Athenians and their allies Athens surrendered in 404 BCE

MACEDON/MACEDONIA Macedonians viewed themselves as Greek But, how do the Greeks view all foreigners?

PHILIP II OF MACEDON 23 years old, became King of Macedon Improved phalanx Small army, but incredible cavalry 338 BCE, began his march to conquer Greece Son Alexander helped him Killed; Alex became king at 20

BACKGROUND Tutored by Aristotle BUCEPHALUS. “Alexander my son, Macedon is too small- You need to find another kingdom worthy of you!” Purchased for 13 talents. (A talent is a year’s wage.) Wasn’t tamed. Alexander knew that horses often feared shadows so he led him by the reins in all directions, touching him gently, whispering comforting sounds, letting the horse see the movement of sun and shadow, learning there was nothing to fear in this strange field, surrounded by unknown strangers

HELLENISTIC ERA Alexander considered himself Greek because Macedonian culture was Greek culture. In order to differentiate between Classical Greece (which was no longer technically around after Phillip II) and Alex’s reign, historians call Alexander the Great’s reign the Hellenistic Era Hellenization/hellenism = spreading of Greek ideals, thought, and culture throughout Asia

ALEXANDER’S CONQUESTS 334 BCE – Hellespont Persians warned King Darius III of Alexander… he didn’t listen 334 BCE – Granicus Alex’s 35,000 men beat Darius III’s 40,000 Alex begins his pursuit of Darius III 333 BCE – Issus Macedonians outnumbered 2 to 1 332 BCE – Conquers Egypt, crowned Pharaoh Starts naming cities Alexandria 331 BCE – Gaugamela Darius III killed by two generals 327 BCE – marches to Indus River, gets tired, turns around 326 BCE – Bucephalus dies  323 BCE – Alexander dies at Babylon, age 32 Named more than 70 cities after himself. How’d he die? Murder/malaria/an illness – we don’t know.

ALEXANDER’S 10 YEAR CONQUEST

The dbq How to write it well!

Document based question You will receive a prompt and 7-11 documents that will help you answer this prompt This means that you technically don’t need to know anything about the subject, because the documents will help you answer it However, it helps if you have background information handy  I repeat: ALL of the information you need to answer the question is found in the documents It is your job to organize, interpret, and analyze these documents

The DBQ Using the documents, you should be able to make an argument Does he deserve the title “the Great” or not? Or – to what extent does he deserve the title? Major, moderate, minor – or somewhere in between. Your essay will answer that question, and will use the documents to help you! On the Greece webquest:*If you didn't do the SAQs (identify and explain one characteristic from Greek culture that you see in the US today; identify and explain one more) you can do that and get up to three points back per SAQ.

H.I.P.P.!!!!!!!! Historical context: what else is going on in the world that’s going to affect the document? Intended Audience: for whom was the document ORIGINALLY intended? How will that affect what is being said? Purpose: Why was the document created? Point of View: what’s the bias present in the document?
