Basic principles of formal composition. Musical form 1.1. Principles of formal composition: repetition and contrast. The musical form is the structure or time scheme upon which music is developed. Repetition Basic principles of formal composition. Contrast Most current traditional and popular music responds to very simple formal structures.

Types of musical forms 2.1. General classification

Types of musical forms Song Opera Oratorio Mass 2.2. Vocal music forms Compound vocal form of long duration, as a theatrical play entirely set to music . Simple vocal form. Both are compound forms, with long duration and several movements. The oratorio can be understood as an opera with a religious subject although it does not have a scenic representation. The mass is the result of putting together the different prayers that form the liturgy.

These are compound forms that use common composition schemes. They are differentiated because of their instrumental formation. The concerto is for soloists or for orchestras, and the sonata for a soloist instrument.

Binary It consists of three phrases or sections in which the third one is usually the repetition of the first one. Ternary It consists of a main theme A, which contrasts along the piece with new sections and is repeated between each one of them.
