Lecture #5 The Armenian Genocide FLT I will be able to define genocide, and examine the Armenian genocide as a violation of human rights.

Key ideas: 1. Genocide: This is the systematic and purposeful destruction of a racial, political, religious or cultural group, and is not an isolated phenomenon, but occurs throughout history. 2. Danger signals for genocide: These include dictatorship, racist or supernationalistic ideology, use of minorities as scapegoats for societal problems, especially during wartime, or during disintegration of a nation or empire. 3. Attitudes and behaviors that can lead to genocide: examples include ethnicdiscrimination, vandalism, racial slurs, hate crimes, and religious bigotry.

Read The New York Times and the Armenian Genocide and answer the guiding questions 1. What do you think is meant by the phrases: “Newspaper of Record” and "All the News That's Fit to Print?" 2. What could have been the benefits of The New York Times covering the Armenian Genocide and the earlier massacres for the Armenians? 3. Who invented the term “genocide?” Why is creating a word to describe such events important? 4. Why would The New York Times shy away from the use of the term “genocide” when discussing the Armenian Case? 5. At the end of the reading Keller, the executive editor of The New York Times, said he was not qualified to make the determination of whether or not the Armenian Case was genocide. What type of people could Keller turn to help determine this? Why?

Definition of genocide

After reading the article from The New York Times, determine if any of the conditions of genocide were met based solely on the information in the article. Write quotes from the article that supports the specific conditions for genocide. (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
