Volume 8, Issue 4, Pages 283-290 (August 2002) A pH curve of human resting saliva sampled with a small paper slip and its medical application  Tadasi P. Sato  Pathophysiology  Volume 8, Issue 4, Pages 283-290 (August 2002) DOI: 10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2

Fig. 1 A pH meter with an adaptor (‘a’ in A & B) of a plastic plate. The plate is used to exchange measuring mode of pH from a closed state to an open state. When the device was used to measure the pH of a sample containing HCO3−, two kinds of pH curves were recorded (C): a stable pH line in the closed mode and a pH curve in the open mode. A: top view. B: bottom view. Pathophysiology 2002 8, 283-290DOI: (10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2)

Fig. 2 pH curves of a saliva sample and an artificial solution containing HCO3− (A). pHI: stable pH value recorded in the closed mode at 1 min after the start of recording. Δ pHI: difference between pH5 and pH1, which occurred after changing the measuring mode from closed to open at 1 min after the start of recording. Each number of subletters indicates a time in minutes of the measurement. Δ pHL: difference between pH15 and pH5, which occurred in the open mode. The Δ pHI value changes depending on the HCO3−concentration of samples and the initial pH level (B). Pathophysiology 2002 8, 283-290DOI: (10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2)

Fig. 3 Data obtained from five individuals. They were classified in independent groups according to the results of one-way ANOVA. A: two groups of pH1 data, B: four groups of Δ pHI data, C: three groups of Δ pHL, data. Pathophysiology 2002 8, 283-290DOI: (10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2)

Fig. 4 Data obtained from five individuals. They were classified in independent groups according to the results of one-way ANOVA. A: two groups of Na+ data, B: four groups of K+ data. Pathophysiology 2002 8, 283-290DOI: (10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2)

Fig. 5 Reconstructed curves for each individual from the mean values of pH1, Δ pHI, and Δ pHL. in Table 1. Pathophysiology 2002 8, 283-290DOI: (10.1016/S0928-4680(02)00034-2)
