Ming Dynasty Kublai dies, 1294. Series of weak rulers. Too much spent on foreign conquests, officials stealing.

Rise of Ming 1368 – Zhu Yuanzhang becomes emperor. (Hong Wu) Founded Ming dynasty. 300years. Wu – harsh leader, punished disloyal. Died in 1398. Son – Yong Le becomes emperor. 1421 moves capital to Beijing. Built Forbidden City.

Ming Change China Brought back Civil Service exams. Used census to count people, collect taxes. With peace and security econ. and agric. thrived. Rebuilt roads, the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.

Arts New wealthy wanted entertainment. Printed books and theater popular.

Chinese Exploration Ming rulers built large fleets of Junks. Ming emperors sent fleet to trade, show power.1400’s Zheng He led the voyages.

Travels of Zheng He Traveled in SE Asia, later India and Africa. Expanded China’s trade and spread culture. Some felt voyages were too costly. 1433 Voyages ended. (Barbarians)
