7.24 Describe and locate the Mongol conquest of China including Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan.

Mongol Expansion AD 1200’s China successful in Gov’t, Technology & Art Mongols from the North were about to invade.

Who were the Mongols Mongols were nomadic herders from the North. Clans that grazed the Steppes of Mongolia. Excellent horseback riders and fighters.

Genghis Khan AD 1206 Temujin elected Genghis Khan. Khan unified the clans, created a legal code and organized the military. Army of 100,000 warriors in units with skilled officers. AD 1211 invaded N. China. Used terror in attacks.

Empire Builders Khan died in 1227. Territory was divided between sons. 1258 – Capture Baghdad, move towards Middle East. Built the largest land empire in history. Brought damage and stability, grew wealth.

Mongol Conquest 1260 Grandson- Kublai Khan became ruler. 1264- Est. city Khanbaliq in China (Beijing).

Mongols & Chinese 1271 – Kublai Kahn wanted all of China. (1279) Started Yuan Dynasty lasted 100 years. Kublai appointed Mongols to the top jobs in China.

Government and Religion Yuan did not use Civil Service. Respected Confucian. Kublai respectful of outside religions. China reached its height of wealth and power under Mongols. Mongols won the support of many Chinese.

Marco Polo Marco Polo was a famous European traveler. Polo traveled from Venice to Khanbaliq. Polo stayed for 16 years. Kublai sent him on many trips. Ruled Yangzhou, returned to Italy.

Trade and Empire Mongol Empire stretched from China to Europe.. Yuan dynasty expanded sea trade. Muslims and Europeans took Chinese discoveries home. Mongols attempted to invade Japan twice, failed.
