ABOUT THE BIBLE

1. The Bible is a collection of 66 books, written over a period of about 1500 years.

2. The Bible has two major divisions or parts:  The Old Testament: The creation of the world The history of God’s work in the world before Jesus The history of the Jewish nation Devotional and prophetic writings

The New Testament: The life and teachings of Jesus The history and teachings of the first Christians

3. The Bible is written in a variety of styles: history, stories, poetry, sayings, letters, and more.

4. To locate a book in the Bible, you can look it up in the Table of Contents at the beginning of the Bible.

5. Specific places in books of the Bible are located by means of chapter and verse numbers.

7. The King James Version was translated into English in the year 1611 7. The King James Version was translated into English in the year 1611. A number of translations have been published in recent years which use modern English.

Good modern English paraphrases or simplified versions: The New Living Bible (NLB) Today’s English Version (TEV) Contemporary English Version (CEV)

“Translations” are most accurate when compared to the original languages. “Paraphrases” and “simplified versions” are a little less accurate, but often easier to read and understand.

9. It is usually best to begin reading the Bible in the New Testament, in one of the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

10. The Bible is important.   The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. 2 Timothy 3:16 LB
