Expert Group on Marine Research Infrastructure 13 May 2019 Expert Group on Marine Research Infrastructure 7th meeting - 14-15 Nov 2011

Integrity at the core Independent foundation established in 1864 13 May 2019 Integrity at the core Independent foundation established in 1864 Self-owned with no shareholders Stakeholders are represented in our governing bodies and committees We use profits to continuously develop our people and our research and innovation Solid financial background No single majority group can have control of the foundation

Highly skilled people across the world 13 May 2019 Highly skilled people across the world 300 offices 100 countries 8,500 employees, of which 83% have a university degree DNV has more than 9,000 employees in close to 300 offices in about 100 countries. These are approximate figures for DNV in May 2009. We want to stand out by being a trusted and highly competent partner for our customers. That is why we keep a very high level of highly educated staff in DNV, and we put a our resources in ongoing training for our employees. Background. The historical growth of DNV followed the coastline, then gradually expanded.

13 May 2019 DNV’s core competence identify assess manage risk

13 May 2019 Our main services We help manage risk through a very broad service portfolio. But we have three core services: Classification, certification and verification.

13 May 2019 Public-private partnership for data acquisition and sharing, a realistic option ? Database What is it Ownership Users Use MRDB Marine Resource Database GIS-based database with environmental resources in coastal and marine areas – vulnerable to oil pollution Oil & Gas Industry Coastal authorities Industry Public EIA, Environmental Risk assessments (ERA), Oil spill response planning MOD Environmental monitoring Database Database from environmental seabed monitoring studies carried out at the Norwegian shelf Climate and Pollution Agency Research OSPAR reporting Trend analysis SEAPOP Seabird Populations National, long-term monitoring and mapping program for Norwegian seabird populations Authorities (Directorate for nature research, Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.) Oil & Gas industry Authorities / Depts. EIA, Environmental Risk assessments, Oil spill response planning MAREANO MAREANO maps depth and topography, sediment composition, biodiversity, habitats and biotopes as well as pollution in the seabed in Norwegian coastal and offshore regions Authorities / Ministries (budget 2011 of 91,2 MNOK) A number of our partners also supply data and maps from their own studies. Knowledge mapping, Management plans EIA ERA

Public-private partnership for data acquisition and sharing, a realistic option ? Some observations: Focus on usage areas More than on thematic data layers Beneficial to set clear definitions of data content and applications / use define the usage and requirements both from industry and public ex. Unlike its predecessor, SEAPOP has a defined use in industry ERA (data format and adaption) More specialized databases instead of bigger, more generic ones but with data input/output via standards easier for industry to see benefit and to contribute Work towards common industry associations – not single players Avoid «competitive advantage» data content, Industry will not contribute Data owners – publication rights Limited in time Focus on mutual benefit Access to more data than your own no hidden data – reduce uncertainty towards best available data Make it available to public / research (available = downloadable) – Societal benefit
