Summary Guidelines A summary is a shortened, condensed version of items such as articles, stories, films or chapters in a text book. The purpose of a summary is to share the main ideas of the item with your reader. Summaries keep the same tone as the original piece and do not contain opinion. Summaries do not require a formal conclusion.

Target I can write a summary that identifies the central idea of the text and provides supporting details from the piece that are free of personal opinion.
