Conflict Essay General Feedback

Next Week Next Wednesday (20th March), you will undertake a timed critical essay under exam conditions You will, as in the final exam, have a choice of two questions You will not be told in advance what the questions are

How To Revise For Critical Essays Critical Essays are often seen as difficult to revise for Many pupils believe that if they just memorise their quotations, they have studied enough WRONG! The truth is, memorising quotations should not be a priority. You should know your quotes well, but small mistakes in phrasing will not be penalised

How To Revise For Critical Essays Methods of Revision: Quote cards Essay mind mapping Completing essay plans Creating the perfect intro Practising under timed conditions Rereading the novel

Quote Cards As you will have noticed when essay planning, a lot of our essays use the same quotes again and again Therefore, some quotations you should be very familiar with, and you can use similar analysis in these essays OBVIOUSLY you will have to change how you link the quotation to the question!

Quote Cards When creating quote cards, you should include: TECHNIQUE-What literary technique is the writer using in this quotation? CONTEXT-briefly explain where the quotation appears in the text, and what is happening QUOTATION-accurately write down the quotation, with page reference to help you go back and reread this section if needed ANALYSIS-note down detailed analysis of the quotation Q LINKS-What essay Qs will this quotation be useful for?

Quote Card-Example TECHNIQUE- Characterisation CONTEXT- beginning of novel, Atticus explains to Scout about how to understand others better: QUOTE- “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—” “Sir?” “—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” ANALYSIS- Moral advice gives initial insight into Atticus’ character and role in novel as moral compass Simple wisdom demonstrates his lack of prejudice and sympathetic nature Atticus’ views contrast with the close-minded nature of the community, foreshadowing the uphill battle he will face against Maycomb’s values LINKS TO QS-Theme, Character, Key Incident, Conflict

Completing Essay Plans Some days, you may not feel like writing out a full essay as revision. In those scenarios, rewriting an essay plan for a Q might be a better option. Attempting this from memory will test your knowledge of quotations and structuring of an essay. Critical essay plans for different Q types will be available for you on the GLOW site to print out or fill in electronically.

Essay Mind Mapping Another quicker way to test your knowledge of a Q is to create an essay mind map plan This will be a less detailed plan that you can replicate quickly in an exam before you begin writing

Essay Mind Mapping ESSAY TOPIC MP1 Technique- Quote- Link to Q- MP2

Creating The Perfect Intro While we may not know what the essay Qs will be in the exam, we can prepare a solid opening to any essay to ensure the examiner is impressed from the outset We have spoken in the past about preparing the TAS (Title, Author, Summary) section of your intro While your TE (Task, Explain techniques) sections will change, you can ensure you have an impressive opening by practising this

Practising Under Timed Conditions The only way you can truly prepare for the exam experience is by practising essay writing under timed conditions At the beginning of your studying, doing this with a plan and your ‘Essay Writing 101’ booklet will give support However, as you get closer to the exam, practising without notes is the best way to test yourself

Practising Under Timed Conditions Set a timer on your phone of 45mins Ask a friend/parent to set you a question-choose from the list of prose questions on the GLOW site, or one from a past paper If the timer goes and you are still writing, write TIME when the timer goes off, but continue on! Practising writing in full and writing your conclusion is important

Rereading The Novel A very simple way of revising-rereading the actual novel! It has now been a while since you finished reading the novel, and rereading it will help remind you of key plot points, themes, characters and key moments If you feel like you don’t have time to reread the entire novel, look over important sections: Chapters 1-3 Chapters 9-11 Chapter 15 Chapters 16-19 Chapters 20-23 Chapter 28-31

GLOW resources On the GLOW site, there will be a number of resources to help with your revision https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/gc/missinnes/ I would also recommend looking at: SparkNotes BBC Bitesize-their GCSE English Literature section has a whole section on TKAM
