Waleed Iftikhar Michel Mabano ELEC-E8423 - Smart Grid Interconnection of microgrid to the Power system Waleed Iftikhar Michel Mabano 23.04.2018

Introduction Microgrid consist of DER, loads in a defined electrical boundary; can be controlled as a single unit with respect to the grid. according to IEEE Std 2030.7 Microgrid can be operated in a grid connected mode, islanded mode. Loads in a microgrid are categorized into : Priority Critical Controllable Interruptable, Dump and diversion

Benefits and Motivation Benefits offered by a microgrid Access to power in remote location, lower cost and environmental impact Deferral of investment in upgrading and renovating distribution grids Grid resiliency, increased reliability, energy efficiency, Improved power quality, etc.. Motivation for connecting to the power system Reduction of the energy storage need/capacity Power system can act as an additional source to the microgrid, etc... 23.04.2018

Microgrid Structure 23.04.2018

Microgrid Control System Microgrid control system should have real time control and energy management functions that operate in the following situations Operation in grid-connected and islanded modes Automatic transition from grid-connected to islanded mode Resynchronization and reconnection from islanded mode to grid-connected mode Energy management to optimize both real and reactive power generation and consumption Ancillary services provision, support of the grid, and participation in the energy market and/or utility system operation, as applicable 23.04.2018

Interconnection of microgrid to the main grid According to IEEE Std 1547 Connection of DERs must not cause voltage fluctuations higher than ±5% at the PCC. Monitoring system for real output power, reactive power, and voltage at the point of connection for 250 kVA and above` Grounding of the microgrid must not lead overvoltages of the equipments in the main grid. Following fault in the EPS circuit connected to the microgrid A microgrid shall detect unintentional islanding and cease to energize the EPS. Reconnection may occur 5 minutes after voltage, frequency stabilized in the main grid. Amendments in ( IEEE std 1547-2018) DERs shall ride through abnormal V/f for a specified time . DERs shall be able to regulate voltage by changing the reactive power. DERs shall be capable of changing real power following frequency deviations. 23.04.2018

Hierarchial control levels of a microgrid (” Basic Considerations for Integration of Microgrid Systems ”, 2018) 23.04.2018

Communication protocols and architecture All the units in a microgrid coordinate with controller through communication channels. Communication system in a microgrid is influenced by the control system architecture(whether it is centralized or decentralized). Communication channels are characterized by data rates, spectrum, and coverage range, latency, etc ... 23.04.2018

Available communication to microgrid (“Survey of Communication System for DG’s and Microgrid in Electrical Power Grid”, 2016 ) 23.04.2018

Microgrid Pilot (St Julien en quint) Motivation Regular power outage due to storm Stage I 45 clients defined in the boundary Stage I concluded with annual power consumption measurements(10 min interval). Among scenarios being studied Maximum PV production Optimal local production ESS and DR .

Conclusions In grid-connected mode, a microgrid is seen as a single controllable unit, from the main grid perspective. microgrid connection to the main grid side must not lead to negative impacts at the PCC. Control system architecture will dictate the communication solutions. 23.04.2018
