Vocabulary (There will be more vocabulary later) Measures of Variation - Used to describe the distribution of the data. Range – A measure of variation that tells the difference between the greatest and the least values of the set. It describes whether the data are spread out or clustered together
Find the range for each set of data. Example 1 Find Range Find the range for each set of data.
Find the range for each set of data. Example 2 Find Range Find the range for each set of data. The age in years of Mrs. Tyznik’s grandchildren: 27, 8, 5, 19, 21, 10, 4, and 21.
Example 3 – Your Turn Find Range Find the range for each set of data. The cost in dollars of DVDs: 20, 25, 15, 16, 10, and 19
Vocabulary Quartiles- The values that divide the data into four equal parts. Lower Quartile (Q1) – The median of the lower half set of data Median(Q2) – The middle number in the data Upper Quartile (Q3)- The median of the upper half of a set of data Interquartile Range (IQR)- The range of the middle half of a set of data. The difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile
Notes
Notes The median of a set of data separates the set in half One half of the data lies between the lower quartile and the upper quartile Interquartile range = Upper Quartile Minus Lower Quartile IQR = Q3 – Q1 Measures of Variation: Range Lower Quartile Median Upper Quartile
Example 4 Identify Measures of Variation Find the range, Q1, Q2, and Q3 for the data in the table.
Notes A small IQR means that the data in the middle of the set are close in value. A large IQR means that the data in the middle are spread out, or vary.
Example 5 Identify Measures of Variation Find the range, Q1, Q2, and Q3 for the data in the table.
Example 6 Identify Measures of Variation Find the range, Q1, Q2, and Q3 for the data in the table.
Vocabulary Outlier – Data that are more than 1.5 times the value of the interquartile range beyond the quartiles
Find any outliers in the data set. Example 7 Find Outliers Find any outliers in the data set.
Find any outliers in the data set. Example 7 Find Outliers Find any outliers in the data set.
