Fairy Tale Elements A fairy tale is a short story that features folkloric fantasy characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants, mermaids, or gnomes, and magic or enchantments. However, not every fairy tale must have fairies. Talking animals seem to be more common to the fairy tale than fairies themselves.

Fairy Tale Elements Unlike legends or myths, fairy tales take place once upon a time rather than in actual times. It moves in an unreal world without definite locality or definite creatures and is filled with the marvelous. Transformation is the key feature of the genre.
