Welcome Back!!! January 9, 2017 English 11

Introductions… While I may know all of you, and you all seem to know me, not everyone knows each other. Please introduce yourself to the class and address the following things: Your name One (1) interesting thing that you did over Christmas break. 2-3 interesting / unique things about yourself.

Classroom Expectations The Big Rule I operate my class on the assumption that you are maturing young adults – capable of working together and alone to create a good learning environment. I respect my students. Therefore, I ask that you display behavior that merits my respect and the respect of others. There is no room in this room for any type of behavior (language and otherwise) that could hurt or show disrespect for anyone else. Think before you act. There should be NO: name calling, swearing, put- downs, gossip or anything that would harm another student’s ability to feel like a part of our class. Period.

Cell Phones… Please put them away and keep them out of sight. Period. This means off of your desk and put away. There might be the occasion where you are working independently and are allowed to use them. In that case, I will let you know.

Tardy Policy… Same thing as last semester, as soon as the bell rings, I will shut the door and it will be locked. After I have taken attendance, I will open the door and let you in. Please do not bang on the door. It is your responsibility to meet me after class and ask for your absence to be changed to a tardy.

Absences If in case you are absent from class, please do one or both of the following: Check the website. I update the class website near the end of every BLACK day… Occasionally, I will be unable to post certain documents to the website. In this case, please e- mail me, and I will send you a summary of the day’s lesson with notes, etc.

Something new this semester… This Thursday, everyone will be creating an account on Turnitin.com. More about this later…

This is a NEW semester… Keep in mind that this is a new semester, and a fresh start. This is a reminder to continue doing your best. This is your opportunity to rise above last semester and perform better. It is also the Spring semester, and apathy can certainly slip in…

This Semester at a Glance… “A Modest Proposal” and Satire The Critical Review Essay The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare Memoirs – we will be reading a variety of short personal stories that fall within the memoir canon.
