Mandy wanted to see if a new environmentally-friendly pesticide will prevent insect damage to tomato plants. After making a hypothesis, she conducts her experiment. She treats five tomato plants with traditional pesticide and five with the new pesticide. Mandy also leaves five plants untreated as a control. She makes careful notes of how she set up her experiment and then records her data about all of the plants. Why is it important for Mandy to record her procedures and data accurately?  A. so that the hypothesis will always be correct  B. so that she can look intelligent when she presents her data  C. so that society does not waste money buying pesticides that don’t work  D. so that other scientists can replicate the experiment to make sure the results were accurate Correct answer: D

Repetition/Replication Activity: How Far or Fast Can You Roll a Ball? Day 1

Introduction You are going to have a contest to see which group can roll a tennis ball the farthest or which group can roll a tennis ball the fastest. The class will be divided into groups of 3-4 students. Half of the groups will test rolling the tennis ball the farthest and the other half will test rolling the tennis ball the fastest.

Activity Overview You will have to create the following: materials list procedure for experiment data table to record data (will also need a duplicate data table). Once all testing is finished, they will have other groups performing their same experiment. You will be given a ball and timer (if needed). You can use other materials in the classroom (must be approved) or use any materials from home (must be approved). You are not allowed to push the ball, the ball will have to roll on its own. You must take an average of your data and must have a minimum of 3 trials.

Day 1 Instructions: This is the last day you have to design your experiment. Brainstorm to determine a design on how you will test their experiment. Start creating your materials list, procedure, and data table on paper. Produce a duplicate data table that will be used to collect data and this data table will be will be turned into the teacher at the end of Day 2. Tip: Make sure you can build your design relatively quickly so that you could complete the entire experiment in 1 class period. Tip: For the groups measuring how far your ball travels, note that you will have to be able to measure the distance easily, so making it go clear across the room may not be a great idea. Remember, the objective is to design an experiment that will be replicated to get the same results (your results are validated).
