Kaiti Hill (Titirangi)

Kaiti Hill, also known as Titirangi, has various nature walks leading from the base of it to all the way to the Cook Observatory on top. This Observatory holds a distinction of being the World's Eastern most Observatory. It also was originally an observation post used during World War Two. A gun emplacement below it housed an anti submarine gun and only one shot was ever fired , a test shot!

History At the base of Kaiti Hill at Kaiti Beach, Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil back in October 1769. In 1969, this statue was erected to commemorate the bicentenary of Cook’s visit. In fact it is an ‘imposter'. It is a bronze casting of a marble statue imported from Italy by Captain Cook Breweries from Auckland and is not a likeness of Cook.

Kaiti Hill is a local attraction, offering magnificent views from the summit.

The hill overlooks Gisborne city and excellent views can be seen by driving or walking to the top.

The walk’s The various walks lead to four lookout points. They make for fantastic viewing over Poverty Bay and beyond to Young Nicks Head and Mahia Peninsula.
