Dividing Decimals NBT.7

Learning Targets I can explain how to divide a decimal by a whole number. I can explain how to divide a whole number by a decimal. What goals can we establish through our targets? How can we monitor our progress?

Our Goals

Let’s Review our Vocabulary! Divisor Quotient Dividend With your partner, formulate an equation. Label the parts with the given vocabulary words. Be prepared to share!

Let’s Review… https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/decimals-dividing- animation.html Explain the process for dividing decimals by a whole number. What happens to the decimal? You Try to Warm-Up: Divide 98.4 ÷ 8

Standard Algorithm: You Try a Few On Your Own 1.) Divide 15.6 ÷ 3 2.) Divide 16.52 ÷ 7. Share your strategy! Multiply to find the products. 23.46 x 10 23.46 x 100 23.46 x 1,000

Let’s Review How is dividing whole numbers by decimals different from our last strategy? What previous skill helps you to divide? Can you restate/rephrase the sentences in the box? Multiply the divisor by as many 10's as necessary until we get a whole number.  Remember to multiply the dividend by the same number of 10's. Step One: Let’s multiply 0.2 x 10 in order to slide the decimal to the right. 0.2 x 10 = 2 Step Two: Whatever we do to the divisor we MUST also do to the dividend. 15 x 10 = 150 Step Three: 15 ÷ 0.2 has become ten times larger. We now have 150 ÷ 2. 150 ÷ 2 = 75 THEREFORE 15 ÷ 0.2 = 75

Watch Me Divide 4,214 ÷ 0.49 Divide 56.32 ÷ 16 Today, I have to analyze my equation to determine the process I will use. Divide 4,214 ÷ 0.49 Divide 56.32 ÷ 16

Justify the strategy you used. Work With Me Justify the strategy you used. Divide 92.16 ÷ 9 Divide 210 ÷ 0.15

Create a word problem using one of the equations above. You Try & I Will Help 1.) Divide 371 ÷ 10.6 2.) Divide 45 ÷ 1.8 3.) Divide 5.8 ÷ 4 Create a word problem using one of the equations above.

PROVE IT!! Can you hit the target??? Can you explain how to divide a decimal by a whole number? Can you explain how to divide a whole number by a decimal? PROVE IT!!
