Aim: How can we prepare to write a thematic essay on Fences? Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 Common Core Standards: W.11-12.2, W.11-12.5 and SL.11-12.1 Aim: How can we prepare to write a thematic essay on Fences? Do Now: Choose one of the following essay questions. Answer the essay question and explain why you chose it to write your full-length essay. 1.) How does Fences reveal the universal experience of people pursuing the American Dream? 2.) How is a fence a universal symbol portrayed as a divider and/or protector in Fences? *Show any owed HW. Objective: Students will prepare to write a thematic essay on Fences.

Common Core Standards: W.11-12.2, W.11-12.5 and SL.11-12.1 Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 Aim: How can we prepare to write a thematic essay on Fences? Objective:: Students will prepare to compose a thematic essay on Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Mini-Lesson: Thematic Essay Outline will be introduced. D.) Work Period: Brainstorm one full page on the essay question. It should be informal writing to get your ideas flowing. When completed, you may want to begin writing a draft of your essay (following the outline). E.) Q & A/Reflections: What are your next steps in composing the thematic essay? What assistance/guidance do you need from your teacher or peers to ensure success on this essay?

Comprehension Check: How well you understand the tasks today: Analysis of universal messages of the American Dream and the symbolism of fences in Wilson’s play, Fences SELF-ASSESS: How easy/ difficult was that task?
