Chapter 1 Success as a Path

Before the Job Interview Know the company’s mission statement. Read about the company. Review the responsibilities in the job description. Check salary ranges.

What Interviewers Want What can you do for the company? Are you committed to: Team work? Professional development? Are you enthusiastic? Visualize yourself accepting the job. Have an upbeat tone to your voice.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward Use engaged body language. Make eye contact. Listen actively. Focus on the speaker. Answer questions concisely. Avoid getting off the subject. Be ready to ask questions.

Typical Interview Questions Why do you want to work for us? What do you like best about your work? What are your greatest strengths? What is your proudest accomplishment?

Tough Interview Questions Why do you want to leave your current position? What are you looking for? What is your greatest weakness? Why should I hire you?

Follow-Up Letters Thank the interviewer for his/her time. Reinforce the points you made during the interview. Show your level of interest in the company and the job.

Assessing Job Offers Is the job a good match? Will you have a mentor? Are there advancement opportunities? What are the fringe benefits? Is the salary in line with your skills?
