Raspberry PI 3 Model B Raspberry PI 3 Model Project Board: Four USB ports, which is where you'll connect a keyboard and a mouse. One Ethernet port, and this model also has WiFi/Bluetooth. One audio/video jack. One HDMI port One slot for the microSD card Note that this kit also includes a case and an 8GB or 16GB NOOBS. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Raspberry PI Power Supply It is possible to power your PI using a cellphone charger. However, you must make sure that the charger has the proper specifications. Otherwise, the performance of your PI will suffer. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Raspberry PI Power Supply micro USB cable power supply Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

HDMI Cable You must use an HDMI to DVI cable to attach a monitor to the Raspberry PI Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Sense HAT The acronym, HAT, stands for Hardware Attached on Top. The Sense Hat plugs into all 40 GPIOs. GPIO stands for General Purpose Input/Output. The features of the SenseHat are as follows:. 8X8 LED panel, temperature, pressure, humidity, magnetic field, accelerometer, and joystick. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Raspberry PICamera This is connected directly to a dedicated slot on the top of the Raspberry PI 3 project board. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

RaspiRobot Board This plugs into 26 of the 40 GPIOs. This board is used to drive the motors of the robot. You cannot connect motors directly up to the Raspberry PI project board. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Robot Chassis Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Solderless Breadboard Solderless breadboards are used to experiment with circuits. Components that are plugged into the same row of five holes are in electrical contact. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Jumper Cable Ribbon This ribbon is comprised of 40 jumper cables. Jumper cables are used to connect components plugged into a solderless breadboard to each other and to connect the breadboard to the GPIOs. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Ultrasonic Distance Finder By measuring the time it takes the echo of sound signal to return and knowing that the speed of sound is 343 m/sec at room temperature and one atmosphere pressure, the distance to an object can be determined. A formula for calculating the speed of sound as a function of temperature should be used for a more accurate result. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Capacitors Capacitors hold charge and capacitance is a measure of the amount of charge that can be stored. The unit of capacitance is the Farad, and 1 Farad = 1 Coulomb/Volt. There are numerous kinds of capacitors: aluminum electrolytic, ceramic, trimmer, tantalum electrolytic, to name a few. Each of these has its advantages and disadvantages, so you should follow the recommendation of the circuit designer when building that circuit. The capacitor shown to the right is an aluminum electrolytic which is a polarized capacitor. There are minus signs indicating which side is negative. You must connect the capacitor as indicated on the circuit diagram. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Resistors Resistance means resistance to current flow. The unit of resistance is the ohm. You'll be using resistors to limit the current that flows through the circuits. Resistors are sold in strips as shown in the picture to the right. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Reading the Resistance The most common resistor is the four band resistor code. The first two bands give the first two digits, the third band gives the multiplier, and the fourth band gives the tolerance. The color code is shown to the right. On the following page, you'll see a few examples. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath

Resistor Examples Yellow represents 4, purple represents 7, and red represents 10**2. The resistance is 47 times 10**2 or 4700 ohms. Brown represents 1, black represents 0, and brown represents 10. The resistance is 10 times 10 or 100 ohms. Copyright (c) 2017 by Dr. E. Horvath
