The Tempest William Shakespeare

tem·pest (tmpst)n 1. A violent windstorm, frequently accompanied by rain, snow, or hail. 2. Furious agitation, commotion, or tumult; an uproar: "The tempest in my mind/Doth from my senses take all feeling" (Shakespeare). Idiom: tempest in a teacup/teapot A great disturbance or uproar over a matter of little or no importance.

More About the Theater The orchestra was generally on stage. Theater was designed not just for the elite but for all classes of society. Few props, no backgrounds Actors wore clothing of the time, usually donated clothes from the royal patron. No females; all female roles were acted by males. Theater was less formal, more like a nightclub than now. (Now, it is very rude to call out, get up, or interrupt during a formal play.)

Poetic Verse Play is written in “blank verse” or iambic pentameter. Iambic pentameter consists of unrhymed lines of ten syllables: a weak stress is followed by a strong stress. Shakespeare also uses prose and rhyming lines in the play. Blank verse is usually reserved for the main characters, while prose is often used for the servants and lesser characters.

Role of Music Shakespeare used music to establish the scene and help set the mood. Instrumental music: associated with the world of action Vocal music: used for the inner world of the character Music could show more effectively how the character was feeling than just the lines alone could. (Remember that special effects weren’t like we have today.)

Act I A storm batters a ship carrying Alonso, King of Naples, and his companions. Prospero & Miranda, father & daughter, watch. We learn that Prospero has created this storm. Miranda asks him to stop. We learn of their past exile from Milan. Meet Ariel, a spirit. He reports that the men have reached land safely. Meet Caliban, a monster. He is the son of a witch and the devil; crude

Ariel gets involved He leads Ferdinand to Miranda. They immediately fall in love. Prospero is rude to Ferdinand. Prospero fears a too-quick courtship that would cause Ferdinand not to treasure Miranda.

Act II Other survivors wake up on the island. Their clothes are fresh and clean. Ariel’s song puts them back to sleep. Sebastian & Antonio remain awake. Antonio had usurped Prospero’s place as Duke of Milan 12 years ago. Sebastian manipulates Alonso’s brother to do the same by murdering Alonso. They attempt to kill Alonso. Ariel wakes the others up to prevent it.

Act III, scene 1 Ferdinand is performing heavy laborious tasks for Prospero. He states they’re not a burden, though, because of his love for Miranda. Miranda offers to take his place & ease his burden. Prospero hides & watches. He is happy to see that the two are so in love. Miranda and Ferdinand declare their love and decide to marry.

Act III, scene 2 Caliban is very drunk He continues to pledge his affection for Stephano. Ariel causes trouble among them by making them appearing to contradict & interrupt each other. Stephano beats Trinculo for picking on Caliban. He has Trinculo stand apart from them as they plot to kill Prospero and have Stephano marry Miranda & rule the island.

Act III, scene 3 Alonso and company decide they must accept Ferdinand’s death. Sebastian vows to Antonio to use the next opportunity to kill Alonso. Music is heard; a banquet appears. As they begin to eat, Ariel causes thunder & lightning and (in the guise of a harpy) calls them “men of sin.” Each feels guilty & runs off.

Act IV, scene 1 Prospero agrees to Ferdinand & Miranda’s desire to marry. He tells him he was only testing Ferdinand’s intentions with the hard work. Still, he cautions him about giving in to passion before the marriage. Ariel goes off to gather the rest of the members of the ship. Prospero entertains Miranda and Ferdinand with spirits and a celebration.

Act IV, scene 1 continued Prospero suddenly ends the show when he remembers Caliban and the plot. Ariel has led Caliban, Stephano, and Trinculo on a rough path. They argue over the beautiful clothes on the line, placed there by Ariel as a distraction. They force Caliban to carry what they steal. Ariel and Prospero send hounds after them to attack and frighten them.

Act V, scene 1 Prospero’s plan is nearly complete. All the enemies are gathered in one place. Ariel pities the sorrow and emotions of the men. Prospero decides to show mercy rather than revenge. Ariel is sent to release them. Prospero uses his music to soothe them. He reveals himself as the true Duke of Milan.

Remorse and forgiveness Prospero accuses them of taking away his title and exiling him to the island. Alonso begs his forgiveness. He reports the loss of his son Ferdinand. Prospero explains that he has also lost his daughter. Miranda & Ferdinand are revealed, happy and united, playing chess; Miranda is amazed to see strangers because she has seen so few people in her lifetime. Ariel brings in the sailors, who state that the boat is in readiness to leave.

Bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Caliban and the conspirators are brought forward. They are drunk, tangled in stolen clothes. Caliban has a change of heart. He recognizes his true master as Prospero. He vows to serve Prospero faithfully. They listen to Prospero tell his story of life on the island, and he promises to return home to Milan. Prospero frees Ariel after asking him to make sure their ship gets safely home.

Things to think about. . . You might want to go ahead and write about the background, since you know the opening paragraph always starts there and then leads to the main thesis statement. As we discuss the background, jot down notes.

Ch-Ch-Changes Think about major characters. Who changes? Who does not? Obviously, you’d write about three, using specific events from the play to back your opinion up. You MAY use the book when prewriting Wednesday to help with spelling and to prompt memory, but it won’t help as much as you think if you have not finished reading.

Another option for writing. . . Masters and servants. Prospero has two servants. He was the leader (Duke) of Milan and wants to be in that role again. Why did he lose the dukedom? What good and bad leadership qualities does he show during the play? Has the twelve-year exile affected his leadership ability, do you think? Think about how he treats the others and how he manipulated the characters and events throughout the play.

Repentance/Forgiveness Who is sorry for what he or she has done? What did that character do in the first place, and how did he or she come to feel regret? Does the wronged party forgive? Who is not sorry? Why not?
