Gottlieb Daimler 1834 – 1900) was an engineer, in Schorndorf (Kingdom of Württemberg, a federal state of the German Confederation), in what is now Germany. He was a pioneer of internal-combustion engines and automobile development. He invented the first high-speed petrol engine and the first four-wheel automobile. In 1885 he designed a precursor of the modern petrol (gasoline) engine which he subsequently fitted to a two-wheeler, the first internal combustion motorcycle and, in the next year, to a stagecoach, . In 1900 Daimler the company now is the present day Daimler-Benz AG,

In 1900, De Dion-Bouton was the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, producing 400 cars and 3,200 engines that year; a factory was opened in Brooklyn, New York, making De Dion cars for the U.S. Motor Carriage market Company. . The company soon began producing Internal combustion engines and licenses for other automobile companies with an estimate of 150 makes using them. By 1904 some 40,000 engines had been supplied across Europe. That year, de Dion's factory employed 1,300 and produced more than 2,000 cars a year, all by hand. The assembly line had not yet been introduced.

Steam Powered Cars In the early 1900s, an American named Frank Gardner collaborated with Leon Serpollet, a well-known French engineer, in setting up a factory to produce steam cars. Serpollet had devised an oil-fired multi-tube flash boiler in 1888, which raised steam relatively quickly by means of immediate evaporation via heated tubes. . The oil-fired flash boiler fed steam to a very advanced four-cylinder enclosed engine similar to the contemporary gasoline engine design including poppet valves and an enclosed crankcase. Serpollet's invention was succesful enough that he was able to break the world land speed record in 1902 driving a steam-powered car known as the Paques' (Easter Egg) at 77.06 mph at Nice. Gardner and Serpollet's cars were built in six and eight-cylinder versions until 1907, when Serpollet's death and the growing popularity of petrol-engined cars brought an end to the venture.

The Car ran near silent and with no vibrations The Stanley Steamer The Car ran near silent and with no vibrations In 1906 a Land Speed Record for steam powered vehicles was set at Ormond (now called Daytona) Beach, Florida, by the Stanley works driver, Fred Marriott, in a modified steam race car. His terminal speed of 127.66 MPH was the fastest that ANY human being had ever achieved in a motor vehicle. In a later attempt the car was wrecked and the driver nearly killed. Before the crash the car was traveling at an estimated 150 mph. The Stanley brothers gave up racing after that near fatality. His Steam Land Speed Record lived on for almost 80 years. It was only bettered in when Bob Barber, another American, raised the record to 145.607 MPH in a modern steam turbine car. The cars made by the company were colloquially called Stanley Steamers,

HENRY FORD’S FIRST CAR On June 4, 1896 in a tiny workshop behind his home on 58 Bagley Avenue, Henry Ford put the finishing touches on his gasoline-powered motor car. After more than two years of experimentation, Henry Ford at the age of thirty-two, had completed his first experimental automobile. He dubbed his creation the "Quadricycle," so named because it ran on four bicycle tires. The success of the little vehicle fueled Ford's automobile ambitions, leading ultimately to the founding of Ford Motor Company in 1903.
