Naval Complexes Meeting September 17, 2018 CALTRANS Volume Data For August 2018

5-Year High Monthly Average 94,145 (August 2016) 5-Year Low Monthly Average 76,154 (December 2014) August is typically a busy month in Coronado so no surprise traffic volumes over the bridge were high, coming in just under 92,000 per day on average. We did have 2 aircraft carriers in port throughout the month – not sure how much of a role that played in the bridge volumes. I should point out we are missing data for the first week of August – Caltrans reported their count station was down so we are working with slightly less data than we typically have. 2017 2018

Relative to other recent Augusts, not as bad as it has been but it definitely was on the busy side.

Nothing noteworthy in terms of the overall hour by hour breakdown of traffic – fairly typical with maybe one possible trend in morning traffic… more on that in a second.

Northbound (outbound) traffic… Nothing noteworthy.

We have been hearing more complaints lately about traffic in the early morning hours, between 4 and 6 am… A review of the last few months of data shows volume between 4 and 5am has increased for 5 consecutive months – had been around 1100 vehicles. The 4am hour hasn’t been this high since February 2016. It does seem to have some correlation with the number of aircraft carriers in Port, but there is some data that doesn’t fit that paradigm so I can’t say with any certainty what the cause of the increase is.

5-Year Highest Monthly Average – 27,282 (August 2018) 5-Year Lowest Monthly Average – 20786 (December 2013) Moving on to Silver Strand data…. We appear to have hit a new record high for a monthly average. 2017 2018

Again seeing August experienced a high volume, this time compared to past Augusts… But its not what I would consider to be a significant jump in volume – it was still relatively close to what we have historically experienced.

Hourly traffic patterns remained pretty consistent with past months.

Morning peak hours northbound are in the same ballpark as historical data shows for this time of year; past years we have seen heavy congestion particularly once school is back in session; this is our first August with the new adaptive signals in place along the corridor and so far northbound congestion hasn’t been a problem.

Southbound traffic patterns - again, nothing unusual here. That concludes my presentation – I’d be happy to take any questions you may have.
