Why is Brotherhood Important to the Individual? It is a growing process that we all go through. The individual learns more about the OA and how it works with Scouting. The individual becomes more familiar with our customs and traditions. The individual learns more about the Obligation he has taken. The individual becomes more of a leader than a follower. The individual stays active in Scouting. The individual has more leadership opportunities. The individual gains the feeling of being a part of something bigger than just himself. The individual tends to become more active in his troop. The individual can never receive the Vigil Honor if they never get their Brotherhood. 2004 National Order of the Arrow Conference • www.oa-bsa.org L422 Why is Brotherhood Important?

Why is Brotherhood Important to the Lodge & Council? It helps both with membership retention. It sets example for Scouts and Scouters’ who are not OA members. It sets an example/tradition for Ordeal members of the lodge. It helps find people who are willing to be more active. It helps with meeting one of the requirements for National Honor Lodge. It helps keep the cost of events down because of the man-hours of service we provide. It helps raise attendance at events. 2004 National Order of the Arrow Conference • www.oa-bsa.org L422 Why is Brotherhood Important?

How do we express our message of the Importance of Brotherhood Membership Personal contact. Lodge and Chapter Newsletters. Phone Calls. Emails. Talk to Ordeal members after a Unit’s OA Election. Skits at Conclaves or Fellowships. Promotional video’s The OA Troop Representative. How about the National Website. Brotherhood Mentors. 2004 National Order of the Arrow Conference • www.oa-bsa.org L422 Why is Brotherhood Important?

Conclusion Brotherhood membership in our organization is just one step to developing a better world. We through all of our efforts, teach the things of the spirit that Dr. E. Urner Goodman founded this organization on. We take and live by an Obligation that spreads far beyond its words. It becomes a lifestyle that can better all mankind. Some might think that I have a strange way of teaching this session, they may be right. But, hopefully we have all gained more than just covering another Order of the Arrow topic. Brotherhood and how important it is, doesn’t start or end with our organization. I want you to take the time some time this week to think about what we teach about Brotherhood through not only our words but also, our actions. Neil Armstrong once said “One small step for man, one giant step for Mankind”. Arrowmen take those small steps and watch the giants of men that step forward from this program. 2004 National Order of the Arrow Conference • www.oa-bsa.org L422 Why is Brotherhood Important?
